The 2018 Nobel Prize has been awarded to 2 individuals – Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege. The announcement was made by The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday, 5th Oct 2018.
2018 Nobel Peace Prize: About the Winners
Denis Mukwege – Born is 1955 he is a Congolese gynaecologist. He founded and works in Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in the treatment of women who have been raped by armed rebels. (Source – Wikipedia)
Nadia Murad – She is a Yazidi woman born in Iraq. She was captured and made a sex slave by the ISIS. She now lives in Germany and does human rights work for women affected by sexual violence in war.
2018 Nobel Peace Prize: Contributions
The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize committee said in its official announcement that Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad have been selected for the Nobel Peace Prize of 2018 for “or their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.”
Following is an excerpt from the Official Press release detailing their contribution –
“Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on and combating, such war crimes. Denis Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Nadia Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.”
