The official notification, issued by the Assam Environment and Forest Department on August 23, marks the conclusive halt to manufacturing, importing, distributing, and selling plastic water bottles falling below the specified capacity.

This prohibition of sub-1000 ml plastic water bottles finds its legal basis in the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. The notification leverages the authority vested in the State by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, under Section 23 of the Act. The ban is poised to take effect on October 2.
