The **LIC HFL Assistant Exam** is scheduled to take place on 6th or 7th October 2018. The first stage of the exam would be an **online exam**. This blog on **LIC HFL Maths notes** is related to the Numerical Ability section of the Online Exam. In the Numerical Ability section, candidates would be asked to solve 50 questions in 35 minutes. Speed in solving the **math problems** would be the most important factor for scoring well in this section. Therefore through this **LIC HFL Maths notes blog**, we aim to provide you with a few shortcut tricks to help you find squares of numbers as quickly as possible.

**LIC HFL Maths Notes – Squares of numbers**

**LIC HFL Maths Notes – First Shortcut Trick**

**1) Square of 2 digit numbers using (a+b)² formula.**

Suppose we need to find the square of 96. We can do it using a simple shortcut and get the answer quickly.

Step 1 – Let 9 = a and 5 = b

Step 2 – applying the formula: (a+b)² = a²/2ab/b² (just replace + with a /, as there would not be a direct addition)

= 9² / 2*9*5 / 5²

= 81 / 90 / 25

Step 3 – Adding the numbers from Right to left: Noting the units place value and carrying forward the tens place value to be added with the next number.

First: Note the number **5** from 25 and carry forward the 2.

Second: Add the 2 with the 90 and you will get 92. Note down the unit place value **2**. Carry forward the number 9.

Third: Add 9 with 81. 81+9 = **90**.

So, your answer would be **9025**

**2) Square of 3 digit numbers using (a+b)² formula. It is exactly the above.**

Let us find the square of 234 using this method.

Step 1 – consider 23 = a and 4 = b

Step 2 – applying the formula: (a+b)² = a²/2ab/b² (just replace + with a /, as there would not be a direct addition)

= 23² / 2*23*4 / 4²

= 529 / 184 / 16

Step 3 – Adding the numbers from Right to left: Noting the units place value and carrying forward the tens and hundreds place value to be added with the next number.

First: Note the number **6** from 16 and carry forward the 1.

Second: Add the 1 with the 184 and you will get 185. Note down the unit place value **5**. Carry forward the number 18.

Third: Add 18 with 529. 18+529 = **547**.

So, the answer is **54756**

**3) Finding the square of a number by taking 100 as based **

This is a very simple trick to find the square value of numbers 91 to 99. In this method, we just need to subtract the number for which we need to find the square from hundred and we will get X. Then take the square of X and note it down, as it would be the last two digits of our final answer. Then the next step is to Subtract X from the actual number. The value which we get from this subtraction will be the first 2 digits of our answer.

Let us understand this with an example.

We need to find the square of 93.

Step 1 : 100 – 93 = 7.

Step 2 = 7² = **49**. Note it down.

Step 3 = 93 – 7 = **86**. Note it down.

Answer is **8649**

**Implement the tricks from this LIC HFL Maths Notes blog in solving a mock test now**
