In a significant announcement during the 77th annual technical meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals, Odisha Chief Secretary P K Jena unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in the state’s economic sphere. The mining sector, a crucial contributor, has played a transformative role, boosting Odisha’s revenue from Rs 4,900 crore in 2016-17 to an impressive Rs 50,000 crore in the fiscal year 2021-22.

Milestone Revenue Surge

Jena highlighted the extraordinary journey of the mining sector, emphasizing a remarkable ten-fold increase in revenue over the past five years. This surge, from Rs 4,900 crore to Rs 50,000 crore, vividly illustrates the sector’s indispensable role in reshaping Odisha’s financial landscape.

Continued Support for Metal Industry

Acknowledging the strategic importance of metals and metallurgical infrastructure, Jena assured ongoing support for the industry. He expressed the state’s commitment to fostering technological advancements and collaborating with research institutions, signaling a proactive approach to industry development.

Vision for Sustainability

Jena outlined Odisha’s recognition of the need for the metal industry to undergo a sustainable transformation. Emphasizing the importance of green metal, eco-friendly mining practices, efficient processes, and waste recycling, he stressed the state’s commitment to minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

Evolving the Industry: Metals Institute Meeting

Aligning with the industry’s changing needs, Satish Pai, President of the Indian Institute of Metals, called for a “metamorphosis” in the metal sector. The conference’s theme, ‘Sustainable Transformations in Metal Industries,’ serves as a rallying call for environmentally responsible practices within the industry.

Overview of Three-Day Conference

The ongoing three-day event, starting on November 22, features 60 distinguished national and international speakers addressing various sessions. With almost 700 technical paper presentations, the conference serves as a platform for knowledge exchange. Over 1,300 participants, including government officials, PSUs, corporate leaders, and research institutions, actively engage in the event.

Highlights of the Award Ceremony

The awards ceremony, attended by Union Minister of State for Steel and Rural Development Faggan Singh Kulaste, recognized excellence in five categories. These included Lifetime Achievement, National Metallurgist, R&D in Iron and Steel Sector, Young Metallurgist in Metal Science, and Young Metallurgist in Environmental Science.

Insightful Address by Dignitary: Metals Institute Meeting

Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, is scheduled to address the gathering on November 24, providing further insights into the sector’s future trajectory.
