The Entire Preliminary exam is of Qualifying nature. The applicants who score more than the cut-off score declared by the UPSC, qualify for the UPSC main exam. The marks scored in UPSC Prelims are not counted in the Final Score of the exam.

The second stage of the UPSC Exam pattern is the UPSC Mains (Written) Exam 2019. UPSC Mains (Written) Exam is the most important stage of the UPSC selection process. As Mains marks comprise about 75% marks of the Final Merit List. The UPSC Mains Exam 2019 is a test of the depth of any candidate’s knowledge. The Candidate is expected to write anywhere between 3500 to 4000 words in 3 hours for each of the 4 GS and 2 optional papers.
UPSC Exam Pattern 2019: Personality Test (interview round)
The third stage of the UPSC Exam pattern is the UPSC PERSONALITY TEST 2019 (INTERVIEW). The Interview stage is allotted 275 marks in the UPSC Exam Pattern 2019. The 275 marks of the personality test (out of a total of 2025 marks) are significant as the UPSC can award as high as 80% or as low as 30% of the budgeted marks. This implies a range of nearly 140 marks. The number candidates who qualify for the Interview stage is around three times of the number of vacancies declared in the UPSC Notification
The purpose of the UPSC Interview 2019 is to test the candidates Mental and Emotional Awareness about the happenings around her/him, along with his/her knowledge which was proved in the UPSC Main Exam2019. The UPSC Interview 2019 is conducted by a panel of 5 people headed by a UPSC Member. The Other 4 people are experts in their respective fields.
