Most Prestigeous National Awards of India

Every year, awards are bestowed on exceptional Indians who contribute to the technological, defense, socioeconomic or cultural development of the country.

These are a few of the most prestigious awards given by the Government of India. 

1. Bharat Ratna

- Translation: Jewel of India - Established: 1954 - Highest Civilian award of India - Awarded for exceptional service in any field without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex.

2. Padma Vibhushan

- Translation: Lotus jewel - Established: 1954 - Second highest Civilian award of India - Awarded for distinguished service of a high order in any field.

3. Padma Bhushan

- Translation: Lotus decoration - Established: 1954 - Third highest Civilian award of India - Awarded for distinguished service in any field.

4. Padma Shri

- Translation: Lotus of respect - Established: 1954 - Fourth highest Civilian award of India - Awarded for distinguished service in any field.

5. Param Vir Chakra

- Translation: Wheel of the Best and Courageous - Established: 1950 - Highest Gallantry award of India - Awarded for most conspicuous gallantry or bravery or self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy.

6. Ashoka Chakra

- Translation: Wheel of Dharma (duty) - Established: 1950 - Second highest Gallantry award of India - Awarded for conspicuous gallantry or bravery or self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy.

7. Mahavir Chakra

- Translation: Wheel of Great Courage - Established: 1950 - Third highest Gallantry award of India - Awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

8. Vir Chakra

- Translation: Wheel of Courage - Established: 1950 - Fourth highest Gallantry award of India - Awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

10. National Film Awards

- Translation: Wheel of Bravery - Established: 1954 - Most prominent film award ceremony in India. - The awards are given in three sections – Features, Non-Features and Best Writing on Cinema
