The following article covers important points about the four major types of landforms on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>What are Landforms?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Landforms are <em>topographic features<\/em> on the surface of earth formed by processes such as <em>volcanic activities<\/em>, <em>movement of tectonic plates, sediment deposition, water<\/em> and <em>wind erosion<\/em>. These processes happen over a prolonged period of time (sometimes millions of years). They\u2019re usually in form of a peak and exhibit slopes that are steep. Mountains are usually formed due to <em>volcanic\/tectonic activities<\/em> (movement of plates under the Earth).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mountains rarely occur individually, they\u2019re usually part of <em>elongated chains<\/em>. When a series of such chains are linked together, they constitute a <strong>mountain belt<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mountains erode over time, through glaciers, rivers and weather conditions. Mountains usually aren\u2019t used for agriculture, since the climate and topography aren\u2019t hospitable for it. Mountains are mostly used for recreational purposes such as <strong>mountaineering<\/strong> and for <strong>extraction<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><u>Hills<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10237\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10237 size-full\" title=\"Landforms on Earth: Hills\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Hills.jpg\" alt=\"Landforms on Earth: Hills\" width=\"550\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image credits: Britannica<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hills are lands that rise high above the surrounding area (like a bump on the surface of Earth). But unlike mountains, hills usually <strong>do not have steep slopes<\/strong>, and often have <strong>distinct summits<\/strong>. Hills are usually shorter than mountains, and are easier to climb. Some geographers in the past considered mountains as hills that have heights greater than 1,000 ft (above sea level). However, this theory was discarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hills are formed through <strong>natural geological activities<\/strong>. One such activity is called \u2018<strong>Faulting<\/strong>\u2019. Faulting happens due to the constant movements of rocks underneath the Earth\u2019s surface, which results in shift in the landscapes. Sometimes, hills that are formed by faulting become mountains. Plateaus are remarkably <strong>flatter<\/strong>. Some of them are part of mountain belts. Plateaus take up almost 1\/3<sup>rd<\/sup> of the Earth\u2019s surface and are present on every continent. The highest and the largest plateau is the <strong>Tibetan Plateau<\/strong>, which is in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plateaus are formed by a number of natural processes such as erosion caused by <em>water and glaciers, upwelling of magma or extrusion of lava<\/em>. Most plateaus have a hard-durable surface called the <strong>caprock<\/strong>, formed due to erosion of soft rock. Plains cover more than 1\/3<sup>rd<\/sup> of Earth\u2019s land area. Plains occur on land as well as under the ocean, as coastal plains, plateaus, along valleys or on doorsteps of mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plains, like mountains, hills and plateaus, are formed by various <strong>natural processes<\/strong>. Some are formed when water\/ice erode away rocks\/dirt (sediment) down hillsides and deposit it elsewhere. Plains are formed when layer upon layer of sediment is laid down this way.
