In this blog post, we will cover all the important aspects of this topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Relationship Between Speed, Time &amp; Distance<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Speed = Distance \/ Time<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We can deduce the following from this formula:-<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; When time is constant, distance covered is directly proportional to the speed. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; When distance is the same, speed is inversely proportional to time.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Average Speed<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Average Speed = Total Distance Traveled \/ Total Time Taken<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Remember that average speed is NOT the arithmetic mean of the speeds.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Also, average speed can never be double or more than double of any of the original speeds.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Relative Speed<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When two objects with speed S1 and S2 respectively and they are traveling in:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Same direction, the relative speed (S&#8217;) is the difference of the individual speeds<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>S&#8217; = S1 &#8211; S2<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Opposite direction, the relative speed (S&#8217;) is the sum of the individual speeds<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>S&#8217; = S1 + S2<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Trains Crossing<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If L1 and L2 are the lengths of two trains moving at speeds V1 and V2 respectively, then the time taken by them to cross each other given by,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Time to Cross = ( L1 + L2 ) \/ (Relative Speed)<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Boats &amp; Streams<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If a boat traveling at the speed (B) is in a stream, the speed of which is denoted by S and it is traveling:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">&#8211; Upstream (against the direction in which the stream is flowing)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Upstream Speed = B &#8211; S<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">&#8211; Downstream (in the same direction as that of the flow of the stream)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Downstream Speed = B+ S<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Circular Motion<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; When two runners are on the same circular track, the time taken for them to meet for the first time is given by the following expression:-<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Length of the track \/ Relative speed of the runners<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Number of times two runners meet on the circular track = Number of rounds gained by faster<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">runner over the slower one.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; If ratio of speeds of two runners running in circular track is x : y, they will meet at the starting point again in the time given by the following expressions:-<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">|x \u2013 y| time (if running in the same direction)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(x + y) time (if running in the opposite direction)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Questions on Races<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some points to remember while solving questions based on these are as follows:-<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; the distance covered by the winner = length of the race<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; loser&#8217;s distance = winner&#8217;s distance \u2013 (beat distance + start distance)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;
