This is also one of the important topics of banking awareness for IBPS exams. In this post we would be covering the various types of cheques. <\/span><\/p>\n<h6><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">What is a CHEQUE ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheques are a type of bill of exchange and were developed as a way to make payments without the need to carry large amounts of money. It\u00a0is a document that orders a bank to pay a specific amount of money from a person&#8217;s account to the person in whose name the cheque has been issued. The person writing the cheque is known as a <em><strong>drawer<\/strong><\/em>. The amount is transferred only to the person to whom a cheque is addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are various types of cheques and these are described in the following sections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/ibps-po\/?ref=blogdc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png\" alt=\"IBPS\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png 336w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-150x125.png 150w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Bearer Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One can locate the\u00a0words &#8220;or bearer&#8221; appearing on a cheque leaf. If these words are\u00a0NOT struck out, the cheque is\u00a0known\u00a0as a <em>bearer<\/em> cheque. What this means is that the person holding the cheque can withdraw the amount i.e.\u00a0anyone who presents it to the bank\u00a0can\u00a0withdraw. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence these\u00a0cheques\u00a0are a little\u00a0risky. In case these are misplaced, anyone who finds it can get the money. It is also known as an &#8220;open&#8221; cheque.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Order Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A cheque becomes an &#8220;order&#8221; cheque, either\u00a0when the words &#8220;or bearer&#8221; are struck off or\u00a0when in its place, the words &#8220;or order&#8221; is written on\u00a0the cheque. Such a cheque is payable only to the person whose name is mentioned\u00a0\/ specified\u00a0as &#8221;\u00a0payee &#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus, these checks are relatively safe. One also has the provision of authorising someone for collecting the amount on their behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/ibps-po\/?ref=blogdc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png\" alt=\"IBPS\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png 336w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-150x125.png 150w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Crossed Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Crossing\u00a0a cheque\u00a0refers to\u00a0drawing two parallel lines on\u00a0the cheque with or without additional words like &#8220;&amp; CO.&#8221; or &#8220;Account Payee&#8221; or &#8220;Not Negotiable&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By using a crossed cheque, one can make sure that the amount specified cannot be en-cashed but can only be\u00a0credited to the\u00a0payee&#8217;s bank account.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Anti-Dated Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If\u00a0the date mentioned on a cheque\u00a0is\u00a0earlier than the date on which it is presented to the bank,\u00a0the cheque is known as an\u00a0&#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anti-dated cheque<\/span><\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0This cheque is valid upto three months from the mentioned\u00a0date.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Post-Dated Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If\u00a0the date mentioned on a cheque\u00a0is\u00a0yet to come (future date),\u00a0the cheque is known as a\u00a0&#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">post-dated cheque<\/span><\/em>&#8220;.. A post dated cheque\u00a0is not valid\u00a0earlier than the date mentioned on the cheque.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/ibps-po\/?ref=blogdc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png\" alt=\"IBPS\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS.png 336w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-150x125.png 150w, https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IBPS-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; Stale Cheque<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we mentioned, cheques are valid for 3 months from the mentioned date. If a cheque is presented for payment after this period of\u00a0three months, it is then called <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stale<\/span><\/em> cheque.
