For a positive statement, the question tag used is negative and vice-versa. These type of sentences are usually used to say something and then ask for confirmation. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s very hot outside, <strong>is it<\/strong>?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s very hot outside, <strong>isn&#8217;t it<\/strong>?&nbsp;&nbsp;(correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. In a sentence, a subject must always be in agreement with the verb. They both must either be plural or singular. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Women <strong>is<\/strong> riding horses.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Women <strong>are<\/strong> riding horses.&nbsp;&nbsp;(correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. Collective nouns take a singular verb. Although collective nouns refer to multiple things, but they take a singular verb (as they collectively represent only one entity). Note that there are a few exceptions to the rule (poultry, cattle etc.) For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <strong>class were<\/strong> summoned by the Principal.&nbsp; (Incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <strong>class is<\/strong> summoned by the Principal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;(Correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4. When the subjects are linked with <strong>&#8216;and&#8217;<\/strong>, they take a plural verb. When subjects are linked with <strong>&#8216;or&#8217;<\/strong>, they take a singular verb. The rational behind this is, when linking with &#8216;and&#8217; both things are involved and thus the subject becomes plural and takes a plural verb. whereas when linking with &#8216;or&#8217; only one thing is taken into consideration and thus the subject becomes singular and takes a singular noun. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The SSC CGL <strong>and<\/strong> the UPSC CSE <strong>are<\/strong> prestigious exams.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The cat <strong>or<\/strong> the dog <strong>has<\/strong> gone missing.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/ssc-cgl\/?ref=ba\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"90\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SSC-CGL-Banner.png\" alt=\"SSC CGL Mock Test Series\" class=\"wp-image-35028\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5. Sentences beginning with every, each or everyone take a singular verb. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everyone are allowed to take the free trial.&nbsp; (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everyone&nbsp;is allowed to take the free trial.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6. Comparisons should be made between similar entities. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The malleability of gold is <strong>more than iron<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The malleability of gold is <strong>more than that of iron<\/strong>. (correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the first example the comparison is made between malleability of gold and iron. Whereas, going by the above stated rule the comparison should be made between the malleability of gold and malleability of iron. Thus, the second sentence is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7. For drawing comparisons, when the comparative degree is used the entity compared is excluded from the rest of the class. Whereas when &nbsp;the superlative degree is used for comparison, the entity compared is included along with the rest of the class.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This year&#8217;s exam paper was <strong>more difficult<\/strong> the <strong>any<\/strong> of the previous years&#8217; papers.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This year&#8217;s exam paper was the&nbsp;<strong>most difficult<\/strong> among <strong>all<\/strong> the previous years&#8217; papers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8. \u2018<strong>When\u2019<\/strong> denotes a general sense and \u2018<strong>while\u2019<\/strong> implies a time duration of doing something. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>When<\/strong> preparing for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competitive exam<\/a>, giving and analyzing mocks is of utmost importance. (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>While<\/strong> preparing for a competitive exam, giving and analyzing mocks is of utmost importance. (correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9. <strong>Normally<\/strong> \u2018<strong>than\u2019<\/strong> is used in the comparative degree, but with words like <strong>superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, anterior, posterior<\/strong> and prefer \u2018<strong>to\u2019<\/strong> is used. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Prior than<\/strong> working here, she used to work with an MNC. (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Prior to<\/strong> working here, she used to work with an MNC.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (correct)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10. The preposition &#8216;<strong>off&#8217;<\/strong> denotes separation, at a distance from or far from whereas the preposition &#8216;<strong>of<\/strong>&#8216; denotes cause, origin, quality, possession. For eg:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The drone flew <strong>of<\/strong> the desired course. (incorrect)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The drone flew <strong>off<\/strong> the desired course. (correct) (indicates distance)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These were few of the many rules for sentence improvement \/ correction.
