Aurangabad will now be known as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Osmanabad will be referred to as Dharashiv.<\/strong> This decision comes after a period in which the government solicited suggestions and objections several months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renaming process extends to multiple levels, including sub-division, village, taluka, and district. The state&#8217;s Revenue Department has issued an official notification to solidify this change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Background\"><\/span>The Background<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The choice to rename &#8216;Aurangabad&#8217; as &#8216;Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar&#8217; and &#8216;Osmanabad&#8217; as &#8216;Dharashiv&#8217; was initially made during the last cabinet meeting of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. This decision, which took place on June 29, 2022, was presided over by the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.<\/strong> It&#8217;s noteworthy that this decision occurred shortly before his resignation from office, prompted by a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The current Maharashtra government also made the decision to rename Ahmednagar district as <a href=\"https:\/\/currentaffairs.oliveboard.in\/ahmednagar-renamed-ahilyadevi-nagar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ahilyadevi Nagar<\/a>, paying tribute to the renowned warrior-queen Ahilyadevi Holkar of the 18th century to mark her 298th birth anniversary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"History_of_Aurangabad\"><\/span>History of Aurangabad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of Aurangabad dates back to the 2nd century BC when it was known as Khadki. It was ruled by a number of different dynasties over the centuries, including the Satavahanas, the Vakatakas, the Chalukyas, and the Rashtrakutas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 11th century, Khadki was renamed Khirki by the Nizam Shahi dynasty. Khirki became an important center of trade and commerce and was also known for its beautiful gardens and palaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mughal Rule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 17th century, Khirki was captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb renamed the city Aurangabad and made it the capital of the Deccan region. Aurangabad remained the capital of the Deccan until 1763 when it was moved to Hyderabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Mughal period, Aurangabad was a thriving city and was home to a number of important monuments, including the Bibi Ka Maqbara, the Panchakki, and the Aurangabad Fort. The Bibi Ka Maqbara is a white marble tomb that was built by Aurangzeb in memory of his wife, Dilras Banu Begum. The Panchakki is a series of five watermills that was built by Malik Ambar, a minister of the Nizam Shahi dynasty. The Aurangabad Fort is a massive fort that was built by Aurangzeb to protect the city from invaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post &#8211; Mughal Rule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the decline of the Mughal Empire, Aurangabad came under the control of the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Nizams continued to build and maintain the city&#8217;s monuments, and Aurangabad remained an important cultural and commercial center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1947, India gained independence from British rule. Aurangabad became a part of the newly independent nation of India.
