They&#8217;ve developed a new way to capture carbon dioxide (CO2), the harmful gas that contributes to global warming, and convert it into something useful. This innovation is especially exciting for the steel industry, which is a big part of the problem when it comes to CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Turning_CO2-to-CO_A_Game-Changer\"><\/span>Turning CO2-to-CO: A Game-Changer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Arnab Dutta and Dr. Vikram Vishal, along with their team of dedicated researchers at IIT Bombay&#8217;s National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization (NCoE-CCU), have made a big breakthrough. They&#8217;ve created a special process that can change CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO) at room temperature while using water. This isn&#8217;t just a scientific achievement; it&#8217;s a step towards reducing India&#8217;s carbon emissions, which is an essential part of the plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Carbon_Monoxide_is_Important\"><\/span>Why Carbon Monoxide is Important<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon monoxide (CO) is a versatile chemical that&#8217;s used in many industries. In the steel industry, it&#8217;s crucial for turning iron ore into metal in big furnaces. Right now, we make CO by burning things like coal, which creates even more CO2. But if we can capture and change the extra CO2 back into CO, we can make the steel industry more environmentally friendly and save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_New_Way_to_Convert_CO2\"><\/span>A New Way to Convert CO2<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The way we currently change CO2 into CO involves high temperatures and a lot of energy. But the new process from NCoE-CCU at IIT Bombay is different. It works at regular room temperatures (between 25\u00b0C and 40\u00b0C) and doesn&#8217;t need much energy. What&#8217;s even cooler is that it can use energy from sources like solar panels or windmills, which makes the whole process eco-friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Greener_Steel_Industry\"><\/span>A Greener Steel Industry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This technology has the potential to make a big difference in many industries, but it&#8217;s especially exciting for steel production.
