It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is a violation of girls&#8217; and women&#8217;s human rights and has devastating consequences for their physical and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of FGM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Type I:<\/strong> Partial or total removal of the clitoral hood (prepuce) and\/or the clitoris.<\/li><li><strong>Type II:<\/strong> Partial or total removal of the clitoris and the inner labia (lips) of the vagina, with or without excision of the outer labia.<\/li><li><strong>Type III:<\/strong> Narrowing of the vaginal opening by cutting and repositioning the labia minora or labia majora, with or without excision of the clitoris (also known as infibulation).<\/li><li><strong>Type IV:<\/strong> All other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, such as pricking, piercing, scraping, and cauterization.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevalence of FGM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>At least 200 million girls and women alive today<\/strong> have undergone some form of FGM.<\/li><li>The practice is concentrated in <strong>31 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Data on prevalence is limited and often unreliable<\/strong> due to the sensitive nature of the topic and the fact that FGM is often performed in secret.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences of FHM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Immediate:<\/strong> Severe pain, bleeding, infections, and shock.<\/li><li><strong>Long-term:<\/strong> Chronic pain, difficulty urinating and menstruating, sexual dysfunction, infertility, childbirth complications, and psychological trauma.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_FGM_practiced\"><\/span>Why is FGM practiced?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for FGM are complex and vary depending on the community.
