There are various types in it, <strong>connectors<\/strong> being one of them. Identification of these connectors is the first step in solving the question. Many a times, <strong>conjunctions<\/strong> are also used to join the sentences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sentence Joining<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">First, let us understand the difference between a connector and a conjunction:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Conjunction : <\/b><em>Conjunction is a word used to connect clauses or to coordinate words in the same clause.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Connectors : <\/b><em>Connectors are used between two different (independent) clauses.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A connector can be a conjunction, but not vice-versa.<\/strong> <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Thus, identification of a <strong>Clause<\/strong> is equally important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">What exactly is a clause? <em>A Clause consists of a group of words which includes a subject and a finite verb. That is, it contains only one subject and one verb.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/bank-exams\/?ref=iff\">Take Oliveboard&#8217;s Free New Pattern English Test<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Clauses are mainly of two types:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Independent Clause<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; is a clause which can stand by itself as a simple sentence. It contains a subject and predicate and makes sense by itself. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><i>For example<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u2018she wants to see the northern lights and travel the world\u2019 or as simple as \u2013 \u2018He ran\u2019. Here there is only one subject (He) and one predicate (Ran). Another example would be- \u2018the planets revolve around the sun\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dependent Clause<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; It is also called as a <strong>subordinate clause<\/strong>. Dependent clause help complete the independent clause, as it cannot function on its own and gives out an unfinished thought or idea. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I know the woman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who stole the diamond.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Here, we can divide the sentence in two parts- \u2018I know the woman\u2019- being the independent clause here as it is a generic statement and makes sense as well. The second part- who stole the diamond- is not a self-sufficient sentence, as the subject is missing and hence is the subordinate clause. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/bank-exams\/?ref=iff\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bank-exam-banner-1.png\" alt=\"bank and government exam\" width=\"650\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Connectors<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0There are following types of connectors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Coordinating conjunctions<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong>&#8211; are the conjunctions which connect two simple sentences and are separated by a comma. <strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211; <em>but, yet.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Subordinating conjunctions<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; are the conjunctions which connect one dependent clause to an independent clause. They can begin a sentence or be placed in the middle of a sentence. Always use a comma at the end of the dependent clause if you are using a subordinating conjunction to begin a sentence. \u00a0<strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211; <em>although, even though, though, despite, the fact that.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Conjunctive adverbs<\/strong>&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connect a second sentence to the first and a comma is used after a conjunctive adverb or introductory phrase. <strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211; <em>however, nevertheless. <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><strong>Prepositional phrases<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Prepositional phrases are followed by nouns or noun phrases. Prepositional phrases can begin a sentence or be placed after the independent clause. <strong>For example-<\/strong> <em>despite, in-spite of.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/bank-exams\/?ref=iff\">Take Oliveboard&#8217;s Free New Pattern English Test<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Now, this forms the basics and will help us solve different types of questions of sentence joining. Let us look at some of them below:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Types<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Type 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; You are presented with a phrase or a conjunction that can be used to connect two sentences. You are provided with three pairs of sentences marked with A, B and C. Identify which of the pairs given can be connected by the word or the conjunction given. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same type can have a variation of 4 sentences as well. <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Therefore<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I.\u00a0<\/strong>Many researchers believe that exit costs serve as barriers to separation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>II.\u00a0<\/strong>There are economic and other real costs, including a lower standard of living and loss of time with the children.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>III. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major underpinnings of stability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> I-II<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> II-III<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> II-III<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> I-III<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> none of the above<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Explanation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Therefore is used to depict cause and effect. Upon careful observation of the above sentences, we can say that II is an extension of I as it further explains the exit costs involved. I talks of one of the causes of barriers to separation. And the effect of this barrier is that, it supports stability. This is shocking given that TB is curable and preventable, <\/span><b>but<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2) there are signs of change as the spotlight shines on TB. This includes the UN meet in 2018 titled \u2018united to end TB: an urgent global response to a global epidemic\u2019, <\/span><b>because<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (3) heads of state and government have \u2018reaffirmed their commitment to end the global TB epidemic by 2030\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Explanation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: To solve this type of question, it is necessary to know when a particular connector is used. For example, here, \u2018where\u2019 is used as an adverb with reference to a place\/situation and should be placed at (3) as the sentence initially mentions the title of the UN meet and goes ahead to describe what it consists of (reaffirmation from the head of state and government). \u2018But\u2019 is used to show contrast in expectation and is rightfully at its place at (2). \u2018because\u2019 indicates cause and effect. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/bank-exams\/?ref=iff\">Take Oliveboard&#8217;s Free New Pattern English Test<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Type 3- <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Column based match the following sentences\u2026This is the new type which is seen in the recent exams: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A. \u00a0You may actually look forward to going to work<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">D. they carried a gene that made them feel that they need to eat more food to feel full.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">B. In the diet group, some participants were falsely told that<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">E. if you know you can count on having a good laugh or two at some point during the day.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">C. If your partner does not seem to care where your disagreements are coming from<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">F. \u00a0then he or she is not putting the relationship first.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> A-E<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> B-E<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> C-D<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> C-E<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> A-F<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Explanation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Here, it is important to find a common ground between two columns of the table and then join the sentence as well. It does not need a connector and can be solved on the basis of prepositions and context. Like, B mentions \u2018diet\u2019 and D talks about \u2018food to feel good\u2019. Also, C mentions \u2018partner\u2019 and F talks of a \u2018relationship\u2019. AE has a cause-effect relationship, and thus forms a meaningful and grammatically correct sentence. \u00a0Thus, 1 is the right option. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s all from us in this article of Sentence Joining and its types.
