From his message to shareholders, it doesn\u2019t look like India\u2019s richest <strong>tycoon<\/strong> is worried. But his actions may reveal more than his words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1. Tycoon<\/strong> &#8211; Powerful or wealthy businessman; Baron, Magnate<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At Monday\u2019s annual general meeting, the chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd was <strong>brimming with<\/strong> optimism. Not only did he <strong>endorse<\/strong> Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s vision of <strong>bumping up<\/strong> annual gross domestic product (GDP) by 80% in five years to $5 trillion, he even forecast a $10 trillion Indian economy by 2030. It\u2019s not only possible but \u201c<strong>inevitable<\/strong>&#8220;, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3. Brimming with<\/strong> &#8211; To exhibit something; to show an emotion to a great degree; was filled with<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4. If the outlook is so rosy, why is Ambani <strong>hitting the brakes<\/strong> on a seven-year, $100 billion investment <strong>spree<\/strong> across refining, petrochemicals, telecom and retail? While a breather after such frenzied activity may be understandable, why does he want Reliance to be a zero-net debt company in 18 months? What will it mean for the more than 100 banks and financial institutions around the world that provide India\u2019s largest company and its subsidiaries with billions of dollars, yen, and rupees\u2014in financing and <strong>refinancing<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>7. Something doesn\u2019t add up &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>There is no reasonable or likely explanation for it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>8. Outlook is so rosy &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The situation is likely to be good or successful; seems positive<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>9. Hitting the Brake<\/strong> &#8211; Stopping something<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>10. Spree<\/strong> &#8211; When someone is in a particular activity for a long time<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>11. Deleveraging &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Reducing your debt by selling assets<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In <strong>retrospect<\/strong>, I <strong>tackled<\/strong> the last question <strong>prematurely<\/strong> in October 2016 when Reliance was <strong>shouldering<\/strong> 13% to 14% of the entire investment by India\u2019s top 1,250 listed companies as well as Indian Railways and state-owned electricity boards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>15. In retrospect<\/strong> &#8211; talk, think or consider the past\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>16. Tackled<\/strong> &#8211; to handle something<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>17. What I didn\u2019t <strong>anticipate<\/strong> was that starting a 4G mobile network with lifetime free voice calls and <strong>dirt-cheap<\/strong> data was just the beginning rather than the end of Ambani\u2019s telecom ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>19. Dim<\/strong> &#8211; Become dull<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>20. Anticipate<\/strong> &#8211; Regarded as possible; Intelligent guess<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>21. Dirt-cheap<\/strong> &#8211; very\/extensively cheap<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The goal of Reliance Jio was to acquire at least half of India\u2019s 1 billion-plus mobile customers, and that required continued spending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now that he\u2019s reached 340 million subscribers, though, the endgame is probably not more than a few quarters away. And that\u2019s problematic for the economy. The rest of India Inc. is paralyzed by debt and self-doubt; consumers are overstretched; and so is the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A holiday for Reliance would remove from play the only domestic balance sheet with unspent firepower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The investment cycle for the Jio network is complete, Ambani told shareholders. In other units, too, there\u2019s little left to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveboard.in\/ibps-po\/?ref=hny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Enroll here for a Free Oliveboard IBPS PO 2019 Mock Test<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ambani is selling 20% of the family jewel\u2014Reliance\u2019s refining and petrochemical operations\u2014to Saudi Arabian Oil Co. even though the goal is more strategic than just shedding debt. As my colleague David Fickling wrote, the $75 billion enterprise value at which Aramco is investing is a lot higher than the business is worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saudi Arabia wants takers for its surplus oil in a world of electric vehicles, and if Reliance\u2019s refinery can provide a profitable outlet for 500,000 barrels per day of Saudi crude by converting it into jet fuel and polymers, then Ambani is doing the right thing by taking Aramco\u2019s money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A $22 billion reduction in net debt (to reach zero) will require more than Aramco\u2019s cash. Reliance has <strong>shoved<\/strong> some borrowings into an infrastructure trust together with telecom tower and fibre assets. It\u2019s also taken on BP Plc as a partner in Indian fuel retailing and oil exploration. If Ambani finds <strong>deep-pocketed<\/strong> partners for general retail, as well as for telecom, reaching his goal will be simple enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>22. Shoved<\/strong> &#8211; Put something into something; To insert<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>23. Deep-pocketed<\/strong> &#8211; One who has lot of money<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Banks, however, will <strong>rue <\/strong>the end of his debt-fuelled expansion if loan <strong>syndication<\/strong> deals are only for refinancing and not new money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>24. Rue<\/strong> &#8211; To regret something<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>25. But investors will struggle to reinvest the cash returned by Reliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"sty-ads-1565805384228-3\" class=\"adHolderStory storyadHolderAfterLoad\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-google-query-id=\"CIKzjKfrk-QCFZeKaAod30sNfw\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For one thing, India\u2019s slowdown is deepening. For another, the company\u2019s digitization blitz is causing unpredictable disruption. A day after Reliance told shareholders that they could watch movies on their new home broadband the same day as the cinema release, shares of PVR Ltd, India\u2019s biggest theatre exhibitor, fell more than 8% intraday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-google-query-id=\"CIKzjKfrk-QCFZeKaAod30sNfw\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Several Indian business leaders have sounded the alarm on the Indian economy\u2019s increasingly choppy waters.
