The Indian Navy’s domestically built frontline warships, INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata are set to take part in Exercise MALABAR 2023, which is scheduled to occur at or off the coast of Sydney, Australia from August 11 to August 21, 2023. This exercise will involve the participation of ships and aircraft from the United States Navy (USN), Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

About Malabar Exercise

The MALABAR series of maritime exercises began in 1992 as a bilateral drill involving the Indian Navy and the US Navy.
Over time, it has evolved to include four prominent navies in the Indo-Pacific Region.
The 2020 edition saw the inaugural involvement of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The current year marks the 27th iteration of the MALABAR exercise, which is being hosted by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Objectives of Malabar Exercise

The aim of the Malabar Exercise is to increase interoperability between the navies of the three countries.
The exercise includes a variety of activities, such as surface, air, and subsea warfare exercises.
The exercise also includes humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) exercises.

The Malabar Exercise is seen as a way to promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise also sends a message to China that the three countries are committed to working together to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Exercise Malabar 2023

MALABAR 2023 is set to take place in two distinct phases.
The Harbor Phase encompasses a diverse array of activities like cross-deck visits, professional exchanges, sports events, and comprehensive discussions to plan and coordinate the Sea Phase.
The Sea Phase entails a series of intricate and intense exercises across all three domains of warfare: anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine.
These exercises will encompass live weapon firing drills.
This exercise serves as a valuable platform for the Indian Navy to bolster interoperability, showcase its capabilities, and learn from the best maritime security practices of its partner nations.

The Malabar Exercise is a significant event in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise demonstrates the commitment of the four countries to working together to maintain peace and stability in the region. INS Sahyadri & INS Kolkata

INS Sahyadri, commanded by Capt Rajan Kapoor, belongs to the Project-17 class of multi-role stealth frigates, being the third ship of its kind.
On the other hand, INS Kolkata, commanded by Capt Sharad Sinsunwal, is the lead ship of the Project-15A class destroyers.
These vessels are proudly indigenous in design and construction, having been built at Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai.
They are equipped with cutting-edge weaponry and advanced sensor systems, enabling them to effectively identify and counter potential threats across surface, air, and underwater environments.
