The first celebration happened on May 17, 2006, recognizing the role of ITU in connecting people globally.

Closing the Gap

Originally, World Telecommunication Day, starting in 1969, focused on global communication challenges. As technology evolved, the UN expanded the celebration to World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The aim is to raise awareness about how the internet and other technologies can benefit societies and economies and, importantly, bridge the digital divide.
