Gurugram is set to host the Maritime Information Sharing Workshop 2023 (MISW 23), marking a significant gathering of the regional maritime security community. Navigating the Ocean’s Vital Role

The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) holds immense significance. It serves as a vital hub of economic activities and a bridge connecting continents. It plays a crucial role in global commerce, and its geopolitical dynamics are of great importance. The IOR’s maritime security is not only essential for economic stability but also for maintaining geopolitical equilibrium.

In recognition of these critical factors, the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) was inaugurated on December 22, 2018, with the mission to enhance maritime safety and security in the region.
Currently led by Captain Rohit Bajpai.
IFC-IOR is a unique center where International Liaison Officers (ILOs) from partner nations collaborate to address challenges related to maritime safety and security.
ILOs from twelve countries, including Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the UK, and the USA, are actively involved in the center.
IFC-IOR also maintains active collaborations with 42 other maritime security constructs and has partnerships with an additional 25 countries.
These cooperative efforts are aimed at fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region.
Ensuring maritime safety and security is a shared goal. It requires unified commitment and information sharing among global and regional stakeholders.

Setting Sail with MISW

The Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) actively supports India’s vision of ‘Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)’ through various workshops and training programs.

Among these initiatives, the Maritime Information Sharing Workshop (MISW) stands out as the flagship event.
The first edition of MISW was held in 2019.
This workshop provides a dynamic platform for the exchange of best practices among professionals working in the field of maritime security worldwide.
MISW serves as a catalyst for fostering camaraderie and collaboration among professionals, uniting them in their shared commitment to addressing the diverse challenges posed by threats to maritime safety and security.
These challenges include piracy, armed robbery at sea, smuggling of contraband, irregular and illegal human migration, and other maritime incidents.
These threats are transnational in nature and have a significant impact on global maritime commerce.

Through MISW and other initiatives, IFC-IOR strives to promote international cooperation, build networks, and enhance the collective response to safeguarding the Indian Ocean’s maritime environment and ensuring safe and secure seas for all.

Charting the Course for MISW 23

MISW 23, scheduled from September 14 to 16, 2023.
It represents a significant step forward in fostering engagement with partner nations and regional constructs.
The workshop’s theme, “Advancing Maritime Security for a Sustainable Future,” embodies the collective vision of the participating nations.
This edition of the workshop welcomes delegates from 31 countries, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and is aimed at strengthening collaboration, cooperation, and information sharing among partner countries.
The objective is to contribute to a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous Indian Ocean Region.

The event will be inaugurated by Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy, setting the stage for three days of intense discussions and knowledge exchange. This edition of the workshop is exclusively planned for members of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Djibouti Code of Conduct/Jeddah Amendment (DCoC/JA) countries, further emphasizing the regional focus and commitment to maritime security in the Indian Ocean.

Exploring the Workshop’s Depths

The Maritime Information Sharing Workshop 2023 (MISW 23) will feature engaging sessions and activities over its three-day duration:

1st Day

Thematic training sessions will address topics such as contemporary transnational maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Discussions will emphasize the importance of international cooperation and information sharing in addressing prevailing maritime threats.
The role of technology and innovation in maritime security (MARSEC) will be explored.
The day will also focus on aligning national efforts to create a resilient Maritime Security Architecture.

2nd Day

This day will be dedicated to a scenario-based maritime security exercise.
The exercise will highlight the value of collaboration and information sharing among participants.
It aims to encourage the preparation of contingency plans to counter maritime security and safety threats.

3rd Day

A dedicated workshop will be conducted exclusively for Djibouti Code of Conduct/Jeddah Amendment (DCoC/JA) countries.
The focus will be on refining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for their own Information Sharing Network (ISN).

MISW 23 is designed to provide practical insights, foster collaboration, and enhance the capacity of participating nations in addressing maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.
