India celebrates National Engineers’ Day on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

India declared National Engineers’ Day on September 15, 1968, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the greatest engineers of India.

Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Karnataka.
After studying civil engineering, he worked in various government departments.
Visvesvaraya is best known for his work on irrigation projects, such as the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore and the Khadakvasla Dam in Pune.
Sir Visvesvaraya also played a key role in the establishment of the Bangalore Engineering College, which was later renamed the Visvesvaraya Technological University in his honor.

Visvesvaraya was a visionary engineer who made significant contributions to the development of India.

Who was Sir M Visvesvaraya

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (15 September 1861 – 12 April 1962), also referred to by his initials, MV, was an Indian civil engineer, administrator, and statesman. He served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He was also a prolific inventor, with over 30 patents to his name.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s Life

Visvesvaraya was born in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He studied civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune, and after graduating, he worked in various government departments. He is best known for his work on irrigation projects, such as the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore and the Khadakvasla Dam in Pune. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Bangalore Engineering College, which was later renamed the Visvesvaraya Technological University in his honor.

Visvesvaraya was a visionary engineer who made significant contributions to the development of India. He is known as the “Father of Modern Mysore” for his work on irrigation, transportation, and industrialization projects in the state. He was also a strong advocate for education and social reform.

Some of the notable achievements of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

Designed and patented the automatic water floodgates at the Khadakwasla Dam in Pune.
Built the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore, which was one of the largest dams in Asia at the time.
Established the Bangalore Engineering College, which is now a leading engineering university in India.
Founded the Mysore Iron and Steel Works, which was one of the first iron and steel mills in India.
Served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. During this time he oversaw a period of rapid economic and social development in the state.
Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1955.
Knighted by the British King George V in 1915.
