Q: Can you tell us about your background?
I am Subrata Khanra from West Bengal. I completed my graduation in Mathematics (Hons) from RKMVC College, Kolkata. My father is a farmer, and my mother is a housewife. My sister is a student. After graduation, I heard about the SSC CGL exam from my seniors and decided to attempt it. Despite coming from a modest background, I never gave up on my dream of a government job.
Q: How did your journey in government job preparation start?
After completing my graduation, I started preparing for government exams. Initially, I had no basic knowledge of English and GK, so I struggled. In CHSL 2023 (prelims), I scored only 14 marks in English and performed poorly in GK. However, I didn’t let this discourage me. I had decided to give a second attempt.
Q: What were your initial job achievements?
After failing in CGL 2023 prelims by just 5 marks, I didn’t lose hope. I continued preparing without any break and started taking tests on platforms like Oliveboard. I regularly participated in live mocks, which improved my performance. Eventually, I cleared the prelims for multiple exams, including SSC CGL, CHSL, Selection Post, and CPO.

Q: What motivated you to aim for higher posts?
Initially, my goal was to secure any government job, even a Group D job seemed like a huge achievement. However, I set my sights on higher positions. I then focused all my energy on SSC CGL 2024 and worked harder to improve my scores while managing my preparation and job responsibilities.
Q: How did you prepare for SSC CGL 2024?
Mathematics: Given my background in Mathematics, I didn’t face much difficulty here. I focused on clearing my basics and solved previous year questions (PYQs). I marked important questions and revised them multiple times from Oliveboard.
Reasoning: I followed a similar approach to Mathematics by focusing on PYQs and regularly practicing important topics like puzzles and statement-based questions.
English: This was my weak point, but I worked hard to improve. I focused on learning 50 words daily, including synonyms, antonyms, phrasal verbs, and idioms. I also practiced comprehension from PYQs and took mock tests.
General Knowledge (GK): My strategy was to attempt 22-23 questions out of 25 using intelligent guessing. In the final exam, I correctly answered 16 out of 22 GK questions.
Q: How did you prepare for the Skill Test (DEST & CPT)?
Typing (DEST): I memorized the keyboard layout and practiced typing mock tests from Oliveboard. In the actual test, I had a 0% error rate.
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): I referred to PYQs for CPT preparation and scored 45 in the actual test.
Q: How important were mock tests in your preparation?
Mock tests played a crucial role in my success. I consistently took Oliveboard’s full-length and sectional mock tests, which helped me track my progress. The detailed solutions and analysis provided after each mock test were incredibly helpful for understanding my strengths and weaknesses.
Q: What advice would you give to future SSC aspirants?
- Focus on PYQs: They are your best resource as they mirror the actual exam pattern.
- Start mock tests from Day 1: This helps you evaluate the competition level and work on time management.
- Set a clear goal: My target was to secure a rank under 1000, and I worked relentlessly towards it.
- Believe in yourself: Your hard work will pay off if you stay focused and dedicated.
Q: What was the result of your SSC CGL 2024 attempt?
After working hard and staying consistent, I finally cleared SSC CGL 2024 with AIR 336 and secured my dream post as Inspector of Post. The journey wasn’t easy, but the support from my family, especially my parents and sister, was the backbone of my success. I’m also grateful to the Oliveboard platform, which played a huge role in my preparation.
