The recruitment for FCI Manager happens in two phases- Phase I and Phase II. Phase I is a common exam, while Phase II has different papers for different posts. The preparation strategies for both phases are very different. It is essential to be aware of the change in the exam pattern for FCI Manager 2022. This will help make planning your preparation smoother.
FCI Manager Preparation Plan
It is essential to have a clear idea of how you want your progress in preparing for the exam to look. Here we’ll detail the process of preparation step-by-step which you can modify to suit your pace and focus points.
1. Be aware of the exam pattern
The exam pattern helps distinguish the weightage of sections. In the case of Phase I, the following is the exam pattern-
Sr. No | Name of the Test | No. of Qs. | Max. Marks | Duration (minutes) | Medium of examination |
1 | English Language | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes | English |
2 | Reasoning Ability | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes | Bilingual (English and Hindi) |
3 | Numerical Aptitude | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes | Bilingual (English and Hindi) |
4 | General Studies | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes | Bilingual (English and Hindi) |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 Minutes |
All sections have an equal weightage. Candidates should keep in mind that one can qualify only by clearing both the sectional and the overall cutoff. Hence, it is necessary to give equal importance to each section, even general studies.
2. Carefully go through the Syllabus
Going through the syllabus for each section and understanding the topics of importance for each will help make it clear which topics to focus on. You can check out Previous Years’ Analyses to get a reference of the weightage distribution.
In the following sections, we will cover the important topics that you will have to focus on in each subject and how to tackle these topics.
3. Section-wise FCI Manager Preparation Plan
So, the FCI Manager 2022 Phase I exam has 4 sections- English Language, Reasoning Ability, Numerical Aptitude, and General Studies. Let us see how to plan out the preparation for each section.
English Language
These are the important topics to be covered in the English Section-
Reading Comprehension | Sentence Improvement |
Cloze Test | Phrase Replacement |
Error Spotting | Antonyms Synonyms |
Para Jumbles | Idioms and Phrases |
Fillers – Single, Double | One-Word Substitution |
Verbal Ability |
- Make sure to practice Reading Comprehension questions regularly. These questions always make up a chunk of the section and can be easily scored if practiced properly.
- Reading English editorials from newspapers like The Hindu and The Times of India will help introduce you to a variety of idioms, phrases, and new words.
- Make sure to keep a dictionary with you to refer to the meanings of any unfamiliar words you encounter while reading. This will boost your vocabulary tremendously.
- Use few books but those that are well known for competitive exams. You can find a list here.
- Practice mock tests regularly to improve speed and accuracy in all topics.
Reasoning Ability
The following are the topics that are the main focus of the Reasoning Ability section-
Arrangement and Pattern | Direction and Distance |
Analogy | Inequalities |
Classification | Puzzles |
Series | Verbal Reasoning |
Coding and Decoding | Input-Output |
Blood Relations | Order Ranking |
Seating Arrangement | Syllogisms |
Alphanumeric Series | Logical Reasoning |
- In this case, puzzles make up a good part of the section’s marks. Make sure to practice these as much as possible.
- Proficiency in this section will come only with practice. Practicing enough questions will help make spotting patterns and breaking down questions into simple parts a lot easier.
- Make sure to learn as many tips and quick tricks as possible to help save time. You can find a list of important reasoning books to use here.
- Time is of the essence. Make sure to do enough questions so you CAN recognize the lengthier or time-taking ones. This way you can keep those questions for later or move past them and do the easier ones.
- Similarly, accuracy is important. Candidates should aim at striking a balance between accuracy and the number of questions solved.
- Keep in mind that there is a negative marking. Blind guessing is not recommended as this could backfire and cause you to lose marks.
Numerical Aptitude
The following topics are the main focus of the Numerical Aptitude section-
Data Interpretation | Ratio & Proportion |
Number Series | Percentages |
Quadratic Equations | Profit & Loss |
Data Sufficiency | Averages, Mixtures & Alligation |
Problems on Ages | Simple Interest & Compound Interest |
Partnerships | Work & Time |
Mensuration | Time, Speed & Distance |
Permutation & Combination | Probability |
Simplification | Number System |
Mensuration | Algebra |
- For Numerical Aptitude, Data interpretation is a major topic to focus on. The questions come in caselets and with enough practice, can be easy to solve and score.
- Try and do as many questions as possible from each type for all-around performance. Refer to these books as you prepare.
- Make sure to regularly revise important concepts and formulae. Having these on your fingertips makes things a lot easier and helps reduce the time spent on calculations.
- Try and brush up on mental maths. This will help save time from calculations.
- Focus on reducing careless errors. These errors can reduce marks even from questions where all the concepts and formulae were correct.
- Practice mock tests regularly. First, note which sections need improvement and work on those. Then focus on the speed taken to solve questions and the accuracy. This will help boost performance quickly.
General Studies
General Studies is a newly introduced section. The following are the topics to focus on according to the official FCI Manager 2022 notification-
Indian History | Indian Economy |
Geography | General Science |
Current Affairs |

- Newspapers and magazines will also help keep up with the news as it happens. Make sure to read these every day. You can do so as a break between studying for the other three sections.
- The General Studies section has an equal weightage as English, Reasoning, and Numerical Aptitude. Make sure not to overlook this section as it can easily boost your score.
