The Indian Administrative Service or (IAS) is the managerial arm of the All India Services of Government of India. Members of these services serve the Government of India and the individual states. IAS officers may also be assigned to different public sector undertakings and international organizations. Indian Administrative Service or IAS  was also known as the Imperial Civil Service, i.e. ICS. It is one of the toughest examinations in India. Being an IAS officer is one of the respected professions in the country.  An officer selected in Indian Administrative Service (IAS) gets different types of roles like the 

• Collector
• Commissioner
• Head of public sector units
• Chief secretary
• Cabinet secretary & many others.

The job of  IAS officer includes:

• Framing of policies and advising the ministers on various issues
• Maintenance of law and orders
• Implementing and supervising the policies of State Government and Central Government
• Collection of revenues and working as a court of matters relating to revenues and supervising the expense of public funds.
• Responding towards the emergency of natural disasters

Powers And Responsibilities Of An IAS:

• The IAS officer works as an executive magistrate.
• The main duty of an IAS officer is to maintain law and order of that area.

• If any irregularities happen, the IAS officer has to answer to the state legislature.

• The IAS officer can make policies and implement them according to the finances, but the decision is to be taken by the minister of the IAS working under.
• Any development or changes that happen under the area has to be handled by the respective IAS of that area as per the law & order.
• Monitoring and maintaining the expenses of societies funds and using them according to society’s needs.
• As per policy-making and decision-making, the IAS officer works at various levels of position such as undersecretary, secretary etc.
• The IAS officer must visit places to monitor the new policy and its implementation.

Qualities For An IAS Officer

• Judgmental Skills:  The IAS officer is responsible for doing justice to the people by making fair decisions concerning the overall situation. It is the sole responsibility of the officer to act fairly.
• Decision-making skills: The IAS officer must follow the concept to make fair decisions that lead to the best for the country and its citizens. 
• Understanding:  The IAS officer should understand to eliminate the problem of the people. The  IAS officer needs to support the underprivileged people without violation of any existing rules & regulations.
• Integrity:  In Public Administration, transparency comes with the definition of holding public officials accountable and eliminating corruption. An IAS officer must be clear to observe the actions and decide on the solution accordingly.
• Effective & Efficient skills: It is an ability-based decision to follow proper theory to determine the correct and the wrong things, depending on the consequences of policy and action. The IAS officer must follow the principle of being effective & efficient in taking decisions that lead to the best for the country and its citizens.

Being an IAS officer is a big responsibility for an individual. Based on the duties assigned, an IAS officer needs to manage government activities. This includes developing and implementing the policy in consultation with the minister for the specific department concerned. IAS officer has to be attentive all the time.
