India Ageing Report 2023 Unveils Critical Insights into Elderly Care

UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) India, in partnership with the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), has unveiled the “India Ageing Report 2023”. This highly anticipated report offers insights into the challenges, opportunities, and institutional strategies related to elderly care in India, a country experiencing a demographic transition towards an aging population.

The report was jointly launched by Mr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and Ms. Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director for Bhutan. It aims to provide valuable information and analysis to guide responses and policies concerning the elderly population in India.

About India Ageing Report 2023

The India Ageing Report 2023 is a comprehensive assessment of the living conditions and well-being of older individuals in India. It relies on the latest available data sources, including the Longitudinal Ageing Survey in India (LASI) from 2017-18, the Census of India, Population Projections by the Government of India (2011-2036), and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ World Population Prospects 2022, to offer an up-to-date perspective.

Mr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the aging population in India has access to the care and support they require to lead healthy, dignified, and fulfilling lives. He highlighted that the India Ageing Report 2023 offers a valuable roadmap for achieving this goal and called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in implementing its recommendations.
