Indian Air Force Participates in Exercise Bright Star-23 at Cairo

On August 27th, an Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent set out to take part in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23, a biennial multilateral tri-service exercise. This exercise is scheduled to occur at Cairo (West) Air Base in Egypt from August 27 to September 16, 2023.

About Exercise Bright Star

Exercise Bright Star is a biennial multinational military exercise that is held in Egypt. It is the largest joint military exercise in the Middle East and is designed to improve interoperability between the armed forces of the United States and its partners in the region.

Key Objectives

The main goal of Ex-BRIGHT STAR 23 is to simulate and practice the planning and execution of joint military operations.
This exercise not only fosters strong relationships among participating nations but also serves as a platform to enhance strategic ties between them.
The involvement of Indian Air Force contingents in overseas flying exercises serves as a diplomatic effort, akin to diplomats in flight suits, strengthening international collaboration and understanding.

Exercise Bright Star is a major opportunity for the United States and its partners to improve their interoperability and to work together to address common security challenges. It is also a way to build relationships and trust between the participating countries.

About Exercise Bright Star-23

For the first time, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is taking part in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23, joining contingents from the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Qatar.

The IAF contingent comprises five MiG-29 fighter jets, two IL-78 aerial refueling aircraft, two C-130 transport aircraft, and two C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft. The exercise will also involve personnel from the IAF’s Garud Special Forces and various squadrons, including Numbers 28, 77, 78, and 81. Additionally, IAF’s transport aircraft will facilitate the airlift of around 150 Indian Army personnel for the exercise.

India-Egypt Relation

India and Egypt share a remarkable relationship characterized by deep cooperation and historical ties. In the 1960s, the two nations collaborated on the development of aero-engines and aircraft. Indian and Egyptian counterparts worked together on these projects. Additionally, Indian trainers facilitated the training of Egyptian pilots, which further solidified their partnership.
