1. The tasks of an IPS officer are not limited to the state or central levels, and they are part of the Group A of civil services that ensure the country’s law and order. At the state level, IPS officers can rise from the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to Director-General of Police (DGP), which is the most coveted position for an IPS officer.
2. At the State level, IPS officers will hold positions such as Superintendent of Police, Inspector General of Police, Assistant Director-General of Police, etc.
3. On the National level, individuals might serve their country by joining civil, military, or paramilitary organizations. Examples include the Central Bureau of Investigation, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Intelligence Bureau, and Research and Analysis Wing.

Different Roles In IPS Officer Job Profile

1. Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP): As a DSP, the officers will be responsible for drafting, reviewing, and updating briefs on active criminal cases in areas with senior authorities. They are also responsible for preparing the agenda for meetings between senior officials and other police officers or departments. They are also expected to assist in the coordination of visits by police delegates to India, visits by Indian local and state police administrations, and the police administration Research Division.

2. Additional Superintendent Police (ASP): As an ASP, the officers are assigned any one division among the few divisions. These divisions can be economic, political, cultural, etc., and they are expected to find out administrative works from their seniors. They are also required to gather relevant information and follow up.

3. Superintendent Police (SP): As an SP, the officers are liable for overseeing the financial collection department of police. An IPS officer also supervises staff to verify all civil and criminal administration pending to the state, central and regional government.

4. Joint Commissioner Police: A Joint Commissioner of Police is a Secretary-level Principal Officer who serves as a special counsellor and consultant to senior officers on key issues of police policy and gives direction and solutions to the appropriate bureaus. Through the ITA Division, the Counselor is responsible for updating, resolving, and maintaining the appropriate laws and administering the direct police administration policy.

Power And Responsibility For IPS Officer

IPS officer deals with the civil and criminal administration of the country. The responsibilities of an IPS Officer is to look into the implementation of policies that govern India’s domestic and state police administration. The primary job responsibilities of an IPS officer are to ensure that their subordinates are safe and properly managed. IPS officers work with IAS officers to maintain law and order in the district. Some of the most important duties of an IPS officer are crime prevention, accident prevention (social, economic, etc.), accident management, crime detection, registration of first-time report information, cash transportation security, anti-prosecution and recovery of stolen items, and authorization for loudspeakers, rallies, political/religious functions.

• Security for VIPs: IPS officers are often liable for the safety of VIP’s especially to protect to Prime minister and Chief Ministers.
• Prevent even the economic offences: IPS officers must ensure that there is no physical or economic damage to property or people in their assigned area. To do this, IPS officers must work with local law enforcement to remain proactive and prevent such incidents from occurring.
• Implementing Laws at the regional level: IPS officers must ensure that the rules should be followed in their district or state. They must make sure that all laws are clear to everyone and that the local police follow all laws.
• Commanding Police Forces and collaborating with the Indian Army: IPS officers must coordinate and work with the Indian Army in some special cases or reasons.
