What Is Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS)?

Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) is the government scheme formerly known as Shramik Vidyapeeth (SVP), which aims to provide Vocational Training to neo-literates, non-literates and school drop-outs in the rural regions by identifying skills that have a relevant market in that, particularly concerned region. The JSS Scheme is implemented by the Directorate of JSS, which is a subordinate office of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE). 

History of JSS

The first-ever Shramik Vidyapeeth (SVP) was implemented in the year 1967, March in Mumbai (Worli) and was commissioned by the Bombay City Social Council Education Committee, a voluntary organization engaged in the field of adult education.

Since the introduction of the SVP Government Scheme, there has been a massive success for SVP, and from then onwards Government of India developed a scheme for setting up a network of such institutions in the country in a phased manner. W.e.f the year 2000, the SVP was renamed as JSS.

Due to the gradual change in economic and social setup over the years, there is also a change in the role and scope of JSS, which primarily focuses on industrial workers in urban areas. Now the focus is on the non-literates, neo-literates, unskilled and unemployed youth, particularly from SC/ST/OBC/Minority/Divyang//Women throughout the country, especially to underprivileged people in the rural areas and urban slums. JSS is one of the various schemes provided by the MSDE.

• JSS was one of the unique creations of the Govt. of India, which has been implemented through NGOs  in the country since 1967
•  JSS is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and functions through NGOs with 100% grants from the Govt. Of India
• The vocational skills are provided in non-formal mode to persons with a rudimentary level of education up to 8^th standard and school drop-outs up to 12^th standard in the age group of 15-45 years.
• JSS is reaching out to the unreached and unheard areas to cater for the needs of the poorest of the poor and to other backward communities of the society
