Prime Minister Modi’s visit holds great diplomatic significance, as he becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Greece in four decades. The visit is a significant step toward deepening the bilateral relationship between the two nations. The invitation for the visit was extended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, emphasizing the importance of fostering stronger ties between India and Greece.

Warm Welcome from the Indian Diaspora in Greece

Upon his arrival in Athens, Prime Minister Modi received a heartfelt welcome from the Indian community residing in Greece.

In a gesture that signifies the cultural connection between the two nations, the community presented him with a traditional Greek headdress.

This exchange symbolizes the deepening bond between India and Greece, showcasing the harmonious blend of cultures and the strong ties that unite the two countries.

Historical Significance of the PM’s Visit

During the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects at the ‘Tomb of Unknown Soldier’ in Athens. He laid a wreath at the tomb and inspected a ceremonial Guard of Honour, reflecting his regard for Greece’s historical and cultural heritage.

About Grand Cross of the Order of Honour

The esteemed Order of Honour was established in 1975, bearing the depiction of goddess Athena on its front side along with the inscription “ONLY THE RIGHTEOUS SHOULD BE HONOURED.”

The prestigious Grand Cross of the Order of Honour is conferred by the President of Greece upon Prime Ministers and distinguished individuals who, due to their prominent positions, have significantly enhanced Greece’s prestige.

The citation for this honor reads, “Through Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this honor is extended to the friendly people of India.”

It further states, “On the occasion of this visit, the Greek State acknowledges the Prime Minister of India, a visionary leader who tirelessly advances the global influence of his nation. He diligently promotes India’s economic growth and prosperity through bold reforms, placing environmental protection and climate change at the forefront of international concerns.”

PM Modi’s pivotal role in strategically fostering Greek-Indian friendship across mutual areas of interest is also recognized.

In response, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude towards President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Greek government, and the people of Greece for this esteemed recognition.
