Sudha Murty, the renowned author and philanthropist, who is also the wife of Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy, has been honored with the Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation.

Who is Sudha Murty?

Sudha Murty is an Indian educator, author, and philanthropist. She is the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, a global information technology company. Murty is also a prolific writer, having authored over 15 books in English and Kannada.

Murty was born in Shiggaon, Karnataka in 1950. She studied computer science and engineering at the University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and the Indian Institute of Science. After graduating, Murty worked as a software engineer at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and then at Walchand Group of Industries.

Sudha Murty & Infosys

In 1981, Murty co-founded Infosys with her husband, N. R. Narayana Murthy. She played a key role in the company’s early success, managing the human resources and administration functions. Murty also helped to establish Infosys’s culture of philanthropy and social responsibility.

In 1996, Murty founded the Infosys Foundation to support education and healthcare initiatives in India. The foundation has built over 70,000 libraries in schools across India and has provided scholarships to over 40,000 students. The foundation has also built and supported over 100 hospitals and healthcare clinics in India.

About the Global Indian Award

The Global Indian Award, valued at $50,000, is bestowed annually upon a distinguished Indian individual who has made a significant impact in their respective field.

Canada India Foundation chairman, Satish Thakkar, expressed their delight in presenting the Global Indian Award to Sudha Murty. He acknowledged her lifelong dedication to paving the way for future generations to achieve success in their chosen endeavors and her unwavering commitment to giving back to society. The award was presented to Sudha Murty during a gala event in Toronto on the night of September 30th.

Murthy’s Reaction

Sudha Murty, while accepting the award from Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, expressed her gratitude, saying, “It is my honor to receive this award from your country.”

She also extended her thanks to the Canada India Foundation (CIF) for selecting her as the recipient of this award.
In a heartwarming analogy, she likened CIF to Krishna in the Mahabharata, stating, “Krishna is the son of Devki as well as Yashoda. Devki was his biological mother, and Yashoda brought him up. You are born in India but settled here – that is Yashoda – and your mother is India. You belong to both mothers.”
Sudha Murty praised the Indo-Canadian diaspora as a vital bridge between the two countries, acknowledging their role as carriers of Indian culture in a foreign land and encouraging them to continue their efforts.
She humorously noted, “There is a funny thing about this award because Narayana Murty also received it in 2014, and I got it in 2023. So, we’re the first couple to receive this award.”

Remarkably, she chose to donate the award money to The Fields Institute at the University of Toronto, an institution internationally recognized for promoting collaboration, innovation, and learning in mathematics and various other fields.
