Significance

Status of Lions in India

The status of lions in India is improving, but they are still considered to be an endangered species. The last remaining population of Asiatic lions is found in the Gir Forest of Gujarat, India. In 2015, there were an estimated 523 lions in the Gir Forest, but this number increased to 674 in 2020. This is a significant improvement, but there are still many challenges to the conservation of lions in India.

Threats to Lions

Despite these challenges, there are several conservation efforts underway to protect lions in India. The Government of India has established the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary to protect lions. The park is well-managed and has a strong anti-poaching force. The government is also working to reduce human-lion conflict by providing compensation to farmers for livestock losses and by educating communities about lions.

10th August 2024 Special Day

10th August carries ecological significance as conservationists mark World Lion Day globally in 2024. Coinciding fittingly with the peak of summer pride activity annually, this wildlife advocacy occasion spotlights steady declines in the population of the iconic big cat across ranges. The urgent timing provides a critical moment to galvanize preservation efforts and spur funding allocations before dire scenarios unfold. As zoological societies unite on this particular 2024 date, the message resonates clearly – securing the future of lions secures balance across ecosystems.
