It was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team who recognized the urgent need to highlight the declining lion populations and the threats they were encountering in their natural habitats.
In collaboration with “National Geographic,” the Jouberts initiated the Big Cat Initiative (B.C.I.) in 2009.
In 2013, the Jouberts united the efforts of both “National Geographic” and the Big Cat Initiative under a single banner, aiming to safeguard the remaining big cats living in the wild.
