18th Lok Sabha – General Election Results 2024, Check Live Updates

General elections were held in India from April 19 to June 1, 2024, across seven phases, to elect all 543 members of the Lok Sabha. The votes are being counted and results are being declared on June 4, 2024.

Out of India’s population of 1.4 billion, more than 968 million people were eligible to vote, making up 70% of the total population. A record 642 million voters participated in the election, including 312 million women, marking the highest-ever participation by women voters.

Who won the General Elections in 2024?

To win a majority in the Lok Sabha elections, a party or coalition must secure at least 272 seats out of the total 543 seats. This majority enables them to form the government and select the Prime Minister.

In the 2024 Elections, no single party got the majority of 272 seats. BJP emerged as the single largest party with the maximum number of seats winning 240. The BJP-led coalition, called NDA (National Democratic Alliance) has emerged as the largest coalition comprising 292 seats. The current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi will remain in office for the 3rd consecutive term.

Constitutional Provisions Related to Lok Sabha Elections

The Indian Constitution lays out several key provisions regarding Lok Sabha elections:

Universal Adult Franchise:

• Article 79 establishes Lok Sabha (House of the People) as the lower house of Parliament.
• It mandates that representatives are chosen by direct election based on universal adult franchise [Article 325]. This means every Indian citizen aged 18 or above has the right to vote.

Composition and Representation:

• Article 81 sets a maximum strength of Lok Sabha at 552 members.
• Article 81 further divides these seats into:
  • Up to 530 members representing states.
  • Up to 20 members representing Union Territories (UTs).
• Though earlier there were nominated members from the Anglo-Indian community, this provision expired in 2020 (95th Amendment Act, 2009).

Eligibility for Candidates and Voters:

• Articles 84 and 173 outline qualifications for both candidates and voters.
  • To be a Lok Sabha candidate, one must:
    • Be a citizen of India.
    • Be at least 25 years old.
    • Be registered as a voter in a parliamentary constituency.
  • Voters simply need to be Indian citizens aged 18 or above.

Reservation of Seats:

• The Constitution ensures representation for disadvantaged communities.
  • Specific seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in proportion to their population (Article 330).

Election Commission:

• Though not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, the Parliament established an independent Election Commission to oversee and conduct free and fair elections for Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
