BRO Begins Construction of World’s Highest Motorable Road in Ladakh

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has embarked on an ambitious and pioneering project aimed at building the ‘Likaru-Mig La-Fukche’ road in the Demchok sector of Ladakh. This strategic road endeavor is poised to establish a remarkable distinction as the highest motorable road globally, situated at an impressive altitude of around 19,400 feet.

This achievement will surpass the previous record held by the Umling La Pass. Notably, this groundbreaking initiative was initiated on India’s 77th Independence Day, symbolizing its profound importance for national security and strategic infrastructure development.

More About the Project

  • The present holder of the highest motorable road record is the Umling La road in Ladakh, constructed by the BRO, which stands at an elevation of 19,024 feet.
  • This 52-kilometer road establishes a vital link between Chishumle and Demchok, positioned directly on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) – the disputed boundary between India and China.

Nyoma Airfield

The Ministry of Defence has also commenced an ambitious project this week to expand the Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in eastern Ladakh into a fully operational base capable of facilitating fighter aircraft takeoffs.
