On August 9, 2023, the MeitY (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology) introduced the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) at an event held in New Delhi’s India Habitat Centre. MeitY, along with CCA and C-DAC Bangalore, is leading this challenge. Representatives from these organizations jointly launched the browser development challenge during the event. The challenge brochure was also revealed by them during the occasion.

About MeitY’s Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC)

Aim

The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) is an open competition aimed at inspiring and empowering technology enthusiasts, innovators, and developers across India to create a homegrown web browser.

This browser will feature its own trust store with a built-in CCA India root certificate, cutting-edge functionalities, and advanced security and data privacy features.
The proposed browser will prioritize accessibility and user-friendliness, ensuring support for individuals with diverse abilities.
Additionally, it aims to enable digital document signing using a crypto token, enhancing secure transactions and digital interactions.

Significance

This challenge is a significant step towards achieving the goal of an independent and self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) in the digital realm.
MeitY has been at the forefront of various initiatives that are reshaping the country’s future, and this challenge addresses a critical aspect – the web browser – through which people access the internet.
The Digital India initiative has transformed the nation by empowering citizens, boosting the economy, and improving governance.

Need

The role of CCA in ensuring the security and trustworthiness of digital certificates issued in India is vital.
Creating a robust Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) infrastructure through initiatives like this challenge will enhance secure electronic transactions across the country.
Developing a browser with its own India Root Certificate will help overcome the dependency on foreign entities for SSL certificates, making the country’s internet infrastructure more resilient and capable of withstanding disruptions and threats.

About IWBDC Competition

The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge is open to everyone, allowing anyone to participate and submit their ideas.
The challenge consists of three rounds: the ideation round, where 18 entries will be selected; the second round, where 8 participants will move forward to the final round; and the final round, where a winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up will be chosen.
Participants will receive technical mentorship throughout the challenge.

Prize

With a total prize pool of ₹3.41 crore, the winner will be awarded ₹1 crore and will also receive support to further develop the browser.

Participation

The program saw the participation of over 200 individuals from government departments, industries, startups, and academia through online and offline modes. A panel discussion was held, where MeitY, CCA, and C-DAC officials answered participants’ queries.

The program concluded by inviting innovative minds to join the challenge and create an Indian Web Browser.
