UN Disarmament Week 2024 will be celebrated from October 24 to 30, 2024. Securing our common future: An Agenda for Disarmament

In 2018, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres unveiled a comprehensive vision for disarmament through the initiative “Securing our Common Future: An Agenda for Disarmament.” This agenda outlines a strategic approach to achieving sustainable peace and security for all, especially in light of the increasingly challenging international security landscape, emerging risks, and unmet commitments.

The Agenda for Disarmament comprises four key pillars, each with practical steps to be taken through enhanced partnerships and unwavering commitment:

• Disarmament that saves humanity: This pillar seeks a world free from nuclear weapons, reinforced norms against other weapons of mass destruction, and the prevention of new domains of strategic competition and conflict.
• Disarmament that saves lives: This aspect focuses on mitigating the humanitarian impact of conventional arms and addressing issues related to the excessive accumulation and illicit trade of such arms.
• Disarmament for future generations: It emphasizes the responsible use of technological advances, particularly in science and technology, ensuring human control over weapons and artificial intelligence, and promoting peace and stability in cyberspace.
• Strengthening partnerships for disarmament: This pillar involves revitalizing disarmament institutions and processes, collaborating with regional organizations, ensuring the full and equal involvement of women, empowering youth as catalysts for change, and enhancing the role of civil society and private sector engagement in disarmament efforts.

Furthermore, the Secretary-General’s Agenda for Disarmament recognizes the vital role of disarmament and arms control in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It identifies six distinct Sustainable Development Goals that can be advanced through nine specific actions. This synergy underscores how disarmament and arms control are intertwined with development, offering a unique opportunity to advance both the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the broader Agenda for Disarmament.

History of UN Disarmament Week

UN Disarmament Week was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1978, during its 10th special session on disarmament. The resolution that established the week called on all member states to observe the week by organizing events and activities to raise awareness of the importance of disarmament.

• Since then, the week has been celebrated annually from October 24 to 30, which is the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
