The United Nations inked the first ‘High Seas Treaty’ in a bid to protect the ocean bodies of the world that lie outside the national boundaries and form almost two-thirds of the world's oceans. The last international agreement on ocean protection was signed 40 years ago in 1982 - the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Government has decided to ban the sale of gold jewellery and gold artefacts hallmarked without a six-digit code from next month. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in a statement said that the decision has been taken to ensure quality culture in micro sale units. The decision was taken after a review meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

The Indian Navy successfully test-fired in the Arabian Sea the ship-launched version of the BrahMos supersonic missile. The missile that was tested had the indigenous "seeker and booster. BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India-Russian joint venture, produces supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.
INS Trikand is participating in the International Maritime Exercise/ Cutlass Express 2023 (IMX/CE-23) being held in the Gulf region. IMX/CE-23 is one of the largest multinational maritime exercises in the world. Earlier, in Nov 22, INS Trikand had participated in the CMF led Operation Sea Sword 2.
Listed manufacturing companies recorded lower sales growth of 10.6 per cent in the December quarter of the current fiscal compared to 20.9 per cent in the previous quarter, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India. The moderation in the manufacturing companies was broad-based across the industries, except for cement.
India ranks 108th in the Electoral Democracy Index of the V-dem Democracy report 2023. India's ranking dipped from the 100th position in 2022 to 108th this year in the report's Electoral Democracy Index (EDI) while it was 97th in the Liberal Democracy Index (LDI). Denmark is the country that has been placed at the top rank with a score of 0.89 in the index.
The World Bank and India signed two complementary loans of USD 500 million each to support and enhance the country's healthcare infrastructure. Through this combined financing of USD 1 billion (about ₹8,200 crore), the bank will support India’s flagship Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, launched in October 2021, to improve the public healthcare.

India's unemployment rate rose to 7.45% in February from 7.14% in the previous month, data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The urban unemployment rate declined to 7.93% in February from 8.55% in the previous month, while the rural unemployment rate rose to 7.23% from 6.48%, the data showed.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to provide Rs 1311.20 crores of funds for the Himachal Pradesh tourism projects in order to strengthen the tourism infrastructure. The multi-crore project comes under Phase-1 of the proposed infrastructure development program.
