The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday cancelled the certificates of registration of five non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), while eight other NBFCs surrendered their registrations for various reasons, the central bank said in a release.
The RBI cancelled the licences of Dar's Financial Services, Rolta Holding and Finance Corporation, Vasudeo Securities, Parsoli Corporation and A C Choksi Financial Services.
Separately, Anupam Mercantile, Grand Motor and Finance, Sky Limit International Finance and ASA International India Microfinance surrendered their licences after exiting the Non-Banking Financial Institution (NBFI) business.
Shivam Securities Pvt Ltd and April Investment and Finance Pvt Ltd surrendered their licences after ceasing to be legal entities due to amalgamation, merger, dissolution or voluntary strike-off, the RBI said.
Anagram Industries surrendered its licence after meeting the criteria prescribed for an unregistered Core Investment Company (CIC) that does not require registration.
CDN Finance surrendered its licence after meeting the criteria prescribed for an unregistered Type I NBFC that does not require registration, according to the RBI release.
The government has notified the dissolution of the Digital Communications Commission, an apex inter-departmental decision-making body at the Department of Telecom formed around 37 years ago to decide on policy matters and subjects with significant financial implications.
Formed in 1989 as the Telecom Commission, it was renamed as the Digital Communications Commission in 2018.
"The Government of India has decided that the Digital Communications Commission be dissolved. Now, therefore, with effect from the date of publication of this resolution, the Digital Communications Commission shall stand dissolved," a notification dated September 19 said.
The apex decision-making body comprising senior officials from NITI Aayog, the Finance Ministry, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and other departments helped resolve contentious issues. The Commission firmed up decisions on the majority of telecom matters before they were sent to the Cabinet for final approval.
The Commission helped in taking decisions on matters like spectrum price and recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
The body held its last meeting on September 3, where it firmed up the decision on satcom spectrum.
Elon Musk-led Starlink, Bharti Group-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Industries Ltd's Jio Satellite Communications have received permission to start satcom services in India.
The services, however, cannot be rolled out without spectrum allocation and the second stage of security clearance from security agencies.

Under the programme, IPC will play a lead role in strengthening the reporting, assessment, monitoring and prevention of adverse events associated with medicines and biological products used in organ and tissue transplantation, including products administered to donors and recipients.
Together, the pharmacovigilance, materiovigilance and biovigilance initiatives will strengthen safety monitoring across medicines, medical devices and transplant procedures.
In a major breakthrough for India's deepwater exploration programme, state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has struck gas in the deep waters of the Mahanadi Basin off the Odisha coast, recording encouraging flow and sustained reservoir pressure.
ONGC announced that it made the discovery on September 18 at the MN-DW18-1-H-D well, which was drilled to a target depth of 1,623 metres. This was the first well the company drilled in the basin under the government’s Samudra Manthan initiative, the national offshore exploration mission.

Mirabai Chanu finally ended her long wait for an Asian Games medal, winning silver in the women's 49kg weightlifting event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Wednesday. The Olympic silver medallist lifted a combined 198kg to finish second behind North Korea's Ri Song Gum, who claimed the gold medal.
Chanu's silver marks her first podium finish at the Asian Games after she missed out in her previous two appearances. She finished ninth at the 2014 Incheon Games and was forced to miss the 2018 edition because of injury, before narrowly missing a medal with a fourth-place finish at Hangzhou in 2023.
Chanu made her Asian Games debut at Incheon in 2014, finishing ninth in the women's 48kg category. She missed the 2018 Jakarta Games because of a back injury, before returning at Hangzhou in 2023, where she finished fourth in the 49kg event.
The Hangzhou campaign ended in disappointment after Chanu competed despite a thigh injury. The result left her without an Asian Games medal despite having already established herself as one of India's most successful weightlifters on the global stage.
Her record includes an Olympic silver medal, a World Championships gold and three Commonwealth Games gold medals. The Asian Games, however, had remained unfinished business.
That changed in Aichi-Nagoya. Chanu's silver also ended India's 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games. Karnam Malleswari was the last Indian weightlifter to stand on the podium at the continental Games, winning silver in the 63kg category at Bangkok in 1998.
The Aichi-Nagoya medal comes after another successful season for Chanu. She won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold earlier this year, lifting 190kg in Glasgow with an 85kg snatch and a 105kg clean and jerk.
The Asian Games presented a different challenge, with Chanu competing against some of Asia's leading lifters in the 49kg category. North Korea's Ri Song Gum won gold, while Chanu secured silver with her 198kg total.

Fitch Ratings on Wednesday raised India's GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal year to 6.9 per cent, from 6.4 per cent, citing strong economic growth in the June quarter and overall economic resilience.
According to Fitch, India's economic momentum is likely to moderate over the remaining fiscal year, prompting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to increase interest rates by 0.25 per cent in its October monetary policy meeting.
A growth rate of 7.8 per cent in the June quarter indicates that the "Indian economy has shown resilience in the face of the shock from the US-Iran war, despite the strong terms-of-trade deterioration seen in the first half of 2026," Fitch said.
It said that PMI survey data point to a slower pace of expansion in both manufacturing and services; below-normal monsoon rains will weigh on growth in agriculture and rural demand; and rising inflation will constrain real incomes and consumer dynamics.
Private investment prospects look more buoyant, and we expect investment to rise by more than 10 per cent; non-food credit growth reached 19 per cent yoy in July.
Overall GDP growth will be 6.9 per cent (revised up from 6.4 per cent in June), Fitch added.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), apart from extending its long-standing cooperation agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA), has included space weather along with human and robotic exploration to the package.
The heads of the two space agencies — ISRO Chairperson Dr V. Narayanan and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher — met on the sidelines of the International Space Summit, which was held on September 9-10 in Paris, to sign documents extending their long-standing cooperation agreement for a further five years, until January 8, 2032.
ESA said that the cooperative agreement between the two agencies came into effect in January 2002. They have previously worked together on a range of programmes and initiatives spanning Earth observation, satellite navigation, space science, and mission operations support.

G. Vijayaraghavan, renowned cardiologist and founding director and vice-chairperson of KIMS HEALTH, passed away. He was 84. In recognition of his contributions to the health-care sector, the nation honoured him with the Padma Shri award in 2009.
He served as the institution’s vice-chairperson and led its Cardiology department for over two decades. He also established the hospital’s academic division and as its Dean, spearheaded extensive academic and research initiatives, including the launch of more than twenty Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses.
A native of Kollam, he obtained his medical degree from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1964 and an MD in General Medicine in 1969. He pursued his studies at Christian Medical College, Vellore, obtaining a DM in Cardiology in 1973, and subsequently began his career as an Associate Professor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
In 1976, he conducted research on endomyocardial fibrosis through a collaboration between the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Brompton Hospital in London. He played a pivotal role in establishing the country’s first 2D echocardiography laboratory in 1980.
From 1984 onwards, he served as a university guide for PhD research in Cardiology at the University of Kerala. His research findings have been published in various journals, including international ones. He is also a co-author of a book on Doppler echocardiography and has authored several other books in the health-care field.
He has been honoured with lifetime achievement awards by the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, the Indian College of Cardiology and the Cardiological Society of India. He received honorary fellowships from global medical organisations such as the Royal College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.
International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September, taking place during International Week of the Deaf.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly and first celebrated in 2018. September 23rd was chosen as the day on which the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.
The resolution establishing the IDSL references the 2006 UN Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities (CRPD) and its call to "recognize, accept and promote the use of sign languages" as a major factor in establishing the day of observance.
The 2026 International Day of Sign Languages calls for action to make deaf people’s human rights a reality in all areas of life. Under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights”, the Day highlights the importance of recognising, protecting and promoting these rights, including full access through national sign languages.
This is also the theme for the International Week of Deaf People, which is observed from 21 to 27 September 2026 with daily sub-themes.
The 72nd National Film Awards honour achievements in Indian cinema for the year 2024. The winners were announced on 18 July 2026 by the chairpersons of the three juries. The President of India presented the awards on 22 September 2026 at Ekta Nagar (formerly Kevadia), in Gujarat.
Instituted in 1954, they are conferred every year by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Over seven decades, the awards have recognised outstanding creative and technical achievement in Indian filmmaking. They cover three fields, namely feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema.
Accordingly, the Reserve Bank of India has today issued the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks - Minimum Capital Requirements for Market Risk) Directions, 2026.
The Directions aim to align the market risk guidelines with the revised Basel III framework, as part of RBI's adoption of the Basel standards, while ensuring simplicity of regulations, and providing flexibility, and ease of adoption. The Directions will take effect from April 1, 2027, ensuring sufficient lead time for banks.
