The Reserve Bank of India has on August 20, 2026, imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 2.50 lakh on Shri Vijay Mahantesh Co-operative Bank Limited, Hungund, Karnataka (the bank) for non-compliance with certain directions issued by RBI on ‘Income Recognition, Asset Classification, Provisioning and Other Related Matters -
UCBs’ and ‘Loans and advances to directors, their relatives, and firms / concerns in which they are interested’. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers conferred on RBI under the provisions of section 47A(1)(c) read with sections 46(4)(i) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

As of 19 August 2026, deposits in PMJDY accounts stood at ₹3,16,514 crore, while the average deposit per account was ₹5,356. The number of accounts has increased 2.3 times and deposits have risen 12.8 times over the past 12 years, the ministry said.
The scheme has also facilitated access to digital payments and financial protection. As of 19 August, 41.29 crore RuPay cards had been issued to PMJDY account holders.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has expanded the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID)-based silver hallmarking ecosystem with 341 silver Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 102 districts, and more than 25,000 silver jewellers are registered with BIS ahead of the festive season.
The BIS informed that since the launch of the Silver HUID portal on 1 September last year, over 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have already been hallmarked with HUID. The six-digit HUID under the Hallmarking System Assures Traceability of Silver Jewellery and Artefacts.
The BIS advised consumers purchasing silver jewellery to look for the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app.

Mizoram has so far declared 79 monuments and archaeological sites as State Protected Monuments, while two heritage sites in Champhai district have been declared Monuments of National Importance under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a Minister informed the state Assembly.
The 79 sites were declared protected under the Mizoram Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2001, according to Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga.
He said, the two monuments under the ASI are Kawtchhuah Ropui and Ralven Puk at Vangchhia village and Lianpui Hmun or Lungphun Ropui at Lianpui village, both in Champhai district in the eastern part of the state bordering Myanmar.
Kawtchhuah Ropui and Ralven Puk were declared Monuments of National Importance in 2012, while Lianpui Hmun/Lungphun Ropui received the ASI tag in 2025, he added.
Kawtchhuah Ropui (The Great Entranceway) is a major archaeological site featuring over 170 intricately carved standing stones or menhirs, while Ralven Puk is a rock-cut cave, traditionally used by Mizo ancestors as a lookout or watchpost during times of conflict.
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), under the Union Health Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has for the first time launched reference standards for seven nitrosamine impurities that can occur in pharmaceutical products,
a move aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to detect and quantify potentially carcinogenic contaminants in medicines. Nitrosamines are potent genotoxic and carcinogenic compounds that can unintentionally arise during drug manufacturing, storage or packaging, or through contamination from materials used during pharmaceutical production.
Their control is particularly relevant for medicines used to treat conditions such as hypertension, gastric disorders, diabetes and tuberculosis.

The Andhra Pradesh government and the United Kingdom government signed an MoU to strengthen cooperation in urban development and infrastructure, with a focus on developing Amaravati as a liveable capital. Under the partnership, the two governments will collaborate on infrastructure planning, sustainable urban development,
technology transfer and innovation, and integrated urban mobility. The cooperation will cover project design, feasibility assessment, investment planning, programme management and execution. The initiative will benefit Amaravati as well as 123 municipalities and municipal corporations in Andhra Pradesh.
