Sambit Patra appointed chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation

Sambit Patra has been appointed as the chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

IAS officer, GKV Rao will hold the post of managing director of ITDC.

The India Tourism Development Corporation is a hospitality, retail, and education company owned by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism.

December 2 marks the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.

The day commemorates the brutal history of slavery practiced by colonial rulers of past centuries and aims to eradicate modern forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.

RBI imposes Rs. 1 crore penalty on Union Bank of India

The RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs.1 cr on the Union Bank of India for violating certain provisions related to the sale of stressed assets and reporting of frauds.

This action is based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance & is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers.

GST collection for November 2021 reported at Rs 1.31 lakh crore; second highest since roll out

Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections grew 25% year-on-year to Rs 1,31,526 crore in November, surpassing October’s Rs 1.30 lakh crore mop-up.

Tax collections from import of goods also contributed to the numbers, which were 43% higher, while revenues from domestic transactions, including import of services, were 20% higher compared to November 2020.

Anju Bobby George crowned Woman of the Year by World Athletics

Legendary Indian athlete Anju Bobby George has been bestowed with the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for grooming talent in the country and for her advocacy of gender equality.

Anju, the only Indian to have won a medal in the World Championships with a long jump bronze in the 2003 edition.

Centre forms three-member committee to review criteria for EWS quota

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced the formation of a three-member committee to review the criteria for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservations.

The committee will comprise Former Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Member Secretary ICSSR Prof VK Malhotra, and Principal Economic Advisor to the Indian government Sanjeev Sanyal.

West Bengal secures $135 million World Bank loan to upgrade rural power distribution network

International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) has approved a USD 135 million loans to West Bengal to improve the operational efficiency and reliability of electricity supply in select pockets in the state.

The IBRD and its concessional lending arm, the International Development Association (IDA), are collectively also called the World Bank.

IREDA signs pact with BVFCL to provide techno-financial consultancy for RE projects

State-owned Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) has signed a pact with Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (BVFCL) to provide its techno-financial expertise in developing renewable energy projects and fundraising.

Under the MoU, IREDA will undertake techno-financial due diligence of renewable energy, green hydrogen, green ammonia, etc. for BVFCL.

CRED to acquire Happay for $180 million

Fintech unicorn CRED plans to acquire Happay, a corporate expense management company.

The acquisition is expected to be a cash-and-stock deal, potentially valuing Happay at about $180 million.

While Happay will operate as a separate entity, the team will work closely with CRED to expand the product offering and drive scale.
