Justice D.Y. Chandrachud appointed the 50th Chief Justice of India

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 9, 2022. Justice Chandrachud will take over as the 50th Chief Justice of India after the retirement of the incumbent CJI UU Lalit.

As the CJI, Justice Chandrachud will have a term of over two years, till November 10, 2024.

Jyothi Yarraji becomes first Indian woman to clock sub-13 seconds in 100m hurdle

Jyothi Yarraji has created history by becoming the first Indian woman to clock a legal sub-13 second time in 100-meter hurdles while smashing her own record at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru. She had won the same event in the National Games in Gandhinagar in a time of 12.79 seconds. The 23-year-old Yarraji is representing Railways.

The Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology has become part of the world’s largest and most diverse genomic study covering 54 lakh individuals. It identified 12 thousand 222 places in the human genome that are associated with human height.The study ‘A saturated map of common genetic variants associated with human height’ was published in Nature Journal.

India to Host SCO National Coordinators Meet

Close on the heels of SCO RATS (counter-terror) meet in New Delhi, India will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) national coordinators’ meeting on Oct 17-18 in Delhi to give a boost to its Eurasian agenda of inclusive connectivity, trade & effective counter-terror measures.

India lifted 415 million out of poverty in 15 years, says UN

The UNDP report noted that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on poverty in India cannot be fully assessed because 71% of the data from the 2019-2021 'Demographic and Health Survey' for the country were collected before the pandemic. The incidence of poverty fell from 36.6% in 2015-2016 to 21.2% in 2019-2021 in rural areas and from 9.0% to 5.5% in urban areas.

NHAI to offer NCDs yielding 8.05% for 25 years

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the National Highways Infra Trust (NHAI InvIT) bonds, which he said will offer an effective return of 8.05% per annum.
