ITC board reappoints Sanjiv Puri as chairman & managing director

ITC Ltd’s board has recommended the re-appointment of Sanjiv Puri as the company’s chairman & managing director for a period of five years, effective 22 July, 2024.

Puri, 60, was appointed as chief executive officer in February 2017 and re-designated as the managing director in May 2018.

India's direct tax mop-up in FY24 rises 16% to Rs 4.75 trillion so far

India’s direct tax collection soared 16 per cent to touch Rs. 4.75 trillion this finacial year, showing continuity in revenue growth despite external headwinds.

It said that the numbers so far “continue to register steady growth.” On a gross basis, collection from direct taxes, which includes income and corporation taxes, grew 14.65 per cent to Rs. 5.17 trillion.

A total of 415 million people moved out of poverty in India within just 15 years from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021, the UN said

It said that 25 countries, including India, successfully halved their global MPI values within 15 years, showing that rapid progress is attainable. These countries include Cambodia, China, Congo, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Serbia, and Vietnam.

UP govt approves two thermal power projects a 50:50 partnership with NTPC

The Uttar Pradesh government approved two 'Obra D' thermal power projects of 800 MW each to be built at the cost of Rs 18,000 crore in Sonbhadra's Obra, a move aimed at providing cheaper electricity to the people of the state.

The projects will be executed by the government with a 50:50 partnership with central government-owned power generator NTPC.

Aim to increase e-rupee transactions to a million per day: RBI Deputy Governor

RBI Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar said the RBI is aiming to increase the number of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to 10 lakh per day by the end of 2023.

At present, the number of CBDC or e-rupee transactions stands at about 5,000 to 10,000 a day.

In November last year, the RBI introduced a wholesale CBDC pilot and followed it up with a retail pilot in December.
