Dipa Karmakar scripted history clinching India’s first-ever gold medal at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 30-year-old Olympian registered an average score of 13.566 in the women’s Vault final. This is the first time that an Indian gymnast has won a gold medal in any event at the Asian Championships.
She is the first female gymnast from India to compete in the Olympics, and at Rio 2016. She also became the first Indian to ever win a gold medal at an international gymnastics competition when she won the women’s vault gold medal at the 2018 FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkey.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes, CBDT has notified the Cost Inflation Index, CII for the financial year 2024- 25 for calculating long-term capital gains. The CII for financial year 2024-25, relevant to assessment year 2025-26, stood at 363. The Cost Inflation Index is used by taxpayers to compute gains arising out of sale of capital assets after adjusting inflation.
This notification will come into force with effect from the 1st day of April, 2025. For the financial year 2023-24, the CII was set at 348. It is popularly used to calculate ”indexed cost of acquisition”, while calculating capital gains at the time of sale of any capital asset. An asset is required to be retained for more than 36 months,
(24 months for immovable property and unlisted shares, 12 months for listed securities) to qualify as ’long-term capital gains’. Since prices of goods increase over time resulting in a fall in the purchasing power, the CII is used to arrive at the inflation adjusted purchasing price of assets so as to compute taxable long-term capital gains (LTCG).

After Shaji Karun’s Swaham, which competed for the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes, Kapadia’s film was the first Indian title in 30 years to be selected for the prestigious Competition section. Kapadia is also the first Indian woman to be nomination in the category.
India has emerged as the sole nation among the top five steel producers in the world to witness growth in production during April, while others experienced declines of up to 7%. India, the second-largest steel producer worldwide, recorded a 3.6% increase in production, reaching 12.1 million tonnes in April.
The country has achieved an impressive 8.5% growth in production between January and April this year, having produced 49.5 million tonnes of steel. Japan, the United States, and Russia experienced a 2-6% year-on-year decline in steel production during the month.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on May 22 announced that it has bagged a deal to modernize the core banking technology of Burgan Bank, a leading commercial bank in Kuwait, coming at a time when the IT services giant is seeing increased growth and demand in the emerging markets including the Middle East.
TCS will help Burgan Bank consolidate multiple standalone legacy applications into a contemporary universal banking solution that drives innovation and strengthens customer relationships. Burgan Bank is one of the youngest commercial banks in Kuwait, with a regional network of over 160 branches and 360 ATMs.
Cyclone Remal made landfall on the Bangladesh coast. The cyclone is likely to land into the adjoining West Bengal region around midnight on 27th May, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted. It is the first cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in this pre-monsoon season.
The cyclone that is hurtling towards the West Bengal and Bangladesh coastlines with landfall has been named ‘Remal’ as per the standard convention of naming tropical cyclones in the region. The IMD follows a specific naming convention for tropical cyclones forming in the North Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
The name “Remal”, means “sand” in Arabic. The name was given by Oman. Cyclone Remal is the first pre-monsoon cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this season. In view of the effective cyclone warning and disaster mitigation in the North Indian Ocean region, the WMO came together in 1972 to establish the Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC).
The PTC originally comprised eight member nations — Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sultanate of Oman and Thailand. Howver, the panel expanded in 2018 and included Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen in its list of member nations.
A board responsible for providing technical and logistical support for functioning of community nutrition programmes has been "officially dissolved" as part of a plan for rationalisation of government bodies. The Food and Nutrition Board has been shut down by the Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry. It was a technical wing of the ministry headquartered at Delhi.
The board had a wide network of offices, including four regional offices and as many quality control laboratories in Faridabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The activities of the FNB were officially closed as per a gazette notification dated June 16, 2021. The formal dissolution was approved on Nov 30 last year. Consequently, FNB ceased operations effective December 2023.
The Thiruvananthapuram International airport has received the zero waste to landfill (ZWL) accolade by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII-ITC) Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development. It was the first airport in the country to receive this 'prestigious recognition'.
The ZWL assessment verified that Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has implemented the best waste management practices and achieved a 99.50 per cent waste diversion from landfill. The airport has successfully diverted 100 per cent of plastic waste and 100 per cent of MSW waste (wet and dry).
The markhor (Capra falconeri) is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia, including Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The UN General Assembly proclaimed 24 May the International Day of the Markhor, celebrate it for the first time in 2024.
The markhor was categorized as “near threatened” in 2014 and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, and has been included in Appendix I to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora since 1992.
