RBI Policy Committee Flags Inflation Concerns; March Retail Inflation at 10-Month Low

Majority of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) monetary policy committee members expressed caution on upside risks to inflation, particularly emanating from uncertainties in food prices, at the panel’s policy review, showed the minutes of the meeting on April 19. In March, India’s retail inflation eased to a ten-month low of 4.85 percent, as against 5.09 percent in February.

This data was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on April 12.

The inflation numbers were lowest since May 2023, when it was at 4.31 percent.

The RBI projected CPI inflation for 2024-25 at 4.5 per cent with Q1 at 4.9 per cent; Q2 at 3.8 per cent; Q3 at 4.6 per cent; and Q4 at 4.5 per cent.

Three Indian banks in top 50 banks in Asia-Pacific by assets

Indian banks have been among the best-performing lenders among peers in Asia. Three Indian lenders made it to the list of top 50 banks by assets in the Asia-Pacific region in 2023, up from two in 2022. The aggregate assets of the lenders rose sharply by 50.5% y/y to $1.51 trillion in 2023. The State Bank of India is at 20th position, HDFC Bank at 33 and ICICI Bank at 48.

Three Indian banks in top 50 banks in Asia-Pacific by assets

The aggregate assets of the lenders rose sharply by 50.5% to $1.510 trillion in 2023. A large part of the increase was due to the merger of HDFC Bank Ltd. with its parent Housing Development Finance Corp. Ltd. in July 2022. HDFC Bank's assets jumped 51.3% to $466.35 billion after the merger, propelling the bank up 13 places to 33 in the top 50 ranking.

India's economy to grow at 8-8.3 pc in current fiscal: PHDCCI

India's economy is estimated to grow at 8-8.3 per cent in the current fiscal, industry body PHDCCI said. The country's GDP will grow at an average of 6.7 per cent over the next 23 years to become a USD 34.7 trillion economy by 2047, with a per capita income of USD 21,000, it added.
