Russian President Vladimir Putin announced approval of a coronavirus vaccine for use, claiming it as a world first. Developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Institute, it has been named Sputnik-V, a reference to the world's first satellite by Soviet Union.
The vaccine, however, has not completed its final trials.
In a bid to promote gender inclusivity, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) installed traffic signals that display female icons sporting triangular frock, a shift from default representation of men. Mumbai has become the first city in India to do so.

In Madhya Pradesh, Noted Urdu poet & lyricist Rahat Indori died of cardiac arrest in Indore. He was tested positive for COVID-19. With a 50-year career in poetry, Indori was known for the lyrics of hit films like Munnabhai MBBS, Kareeb, Ghatak and Ishq.
He was also a painter and a professor of Urdu language.
Author, activist and academic Ilina Sen, who had been suffering from cancer for several years, passed away. Ilina, who spent many years in Chhattisgarh and worked with several trade unions and Adivasi organisations, had moved to academics a decade ago.

Noted yesteryear Tamil film lyricist PK Muthusami passed away in Namakkal. He was to complete his 100th birthday this year. Famous songs composed by Muthusami include ‘Mapilai vandar’ and ‘Chinna chinna nadai nadandu’ etc.
He had penned many memorable Tamil film lyrics.
