V Praveen Rao, selected for Dr M S Swaminathan Award for the period 2017-19

V Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor of Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU), has been selected for Dr M S Swaminathan Award for the period 2017-19.

The biennial national award was constituted by Retired ICAR Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited. It carries a cash prizes of ₹2 lakh and a citation.

Fertiliser major IFFCO ranked number one cooperative among the top 300 cooperatives in the world.

The ranking is based on the ratio of turnover over the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, as per Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO).

The ranking is as per the 2021 edition of the 10th Annual World Cooperative Monitor (WCM) report published by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

IFFCO has also inched up to 60th position in overall turnover.

Pradip Shah appointed NARCL Chairman; Sanjay Jain made IDRCL chief

Pradip Shah, founder of IndAsia Fund Advisors, has been appointed chairman of National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL) while Aditya Birla Asset Reconstruction Company managing director Sanjay Jain will be the chief executive of India Debt Resolution Company (IDRCL), the privately owned asset management company (AMC) mandated to resolve bad loans acquired by NARCL.

Dadabhai Naoroji biography wins Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2021

A biography of Dadabhai Naoroji, one of the founders of the Indian National Congress, by Dinyar Patel was named winner of the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2021.

The winner was selected by a jury chaired by political scientist Niraja Gopal Jayal and also comprising entrepreneurs Nandan Nilekani & Manish Sabharwal and historians Srinath Raghavan and Nayanjot Lahi.

India will have nine nuclear reactors by 2024

The nation will have nine nuclear reactors by 2024 and a new nuclear project, the first in northern India, will come up 150 kms away from Delhi in Gorakhpur of Haryana, the government informed the Rajya Sabha.

By 2024, India will have nine nuclear reactors plus 12 new additional ones which were approved during the Covid times with a capacity of 9000 MW.

SBI, Adani Capital sign pact for co-lending to farmers

State Bank of India (SBI) has signed an agreement with Adani Capital, the non-banking finance company (NBFC) arm of the Adani Group, for co-lending to farmers for purchase of tractors and farm implement.

RBI had issued guidelines on the co-lending schemes for banks and NBFCs for priority-sector lending, to improve credit flow towards underserved sectors of the economy.

India joins G20 Troika, to work closely with Indonesia, Italy to ensure consistency of agenda

India has joined the G20 Troika comprising the current, previous, and incoming presidencies of the grouping, the Ministry of External Affairs.

The G20 Troika consists of Indonesia, Italy, and India.

India will assume the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, from Indonesia, and will convene the G20 Leaders' Summit for the first time in India in 2023.

WhatsApp gets NPCI nod for doubling payments user base

Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has been granted permission to double its user base for the payments service to 40 million by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

WhatsApp has a total user base of 400 million and the development will help the platform compete better with entrenched rivals like Google Pay and Phone Pe.

IMF appoints chief economist Gita Gopinath as first deputy MD

The International Monetary Fund appointed its outgoing chief economist Gita Gopinath as its first deputy managing director (FDMD), the second-highest position at the multilateral lending agency after that of the managing director.

Gopinath will start in her new position as FDMD on 21 January 2022 after current FDMD Geoffrey Okamoto leaves the Fund early next year.
