Indian Navy's 'Killers' squadron, that sunk Pakistan warships, to get President's Standard

The Indian Navy's 22nd Missile Vessel Squadron, that bombed the Karachi Port and sunk Pakistan Navy's vessels in the 1971 war, received the President's Standard, a rare honour for its distinguished service, from President Ram Nath Kovind.

The Indian Navy was awarded the President's Colours on May 27, 1951 by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Chief of defence staff Gen Bipin Rawat dies in IAF chopper crash in Tamil Nadu

Chief of defence staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat died after an Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper he was on board crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. His wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others were also killed in the mishap, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said.

Rawat had taken over as India’s first chief of defence staff (CDS) on December 31, 2019.

UPI-based payment products to be launched for feature phone users: RBI

The RBI governor Shaktikanta Das announced that UPI-based payment products will be launched for feature phone users. Also enhanced the transaction limit to Rs. 5L from Rs. 2 L for UPI payments for RBI's Retail Direct scheme & IPO offering applications. RBI's Retail Direct scheme facilitates investment by individuals into government securities by opening gilt securities.

Inti Tanager: Colorful New Species of Bird Discovered in South America

A team of ornithologists from Brazil and Finland has discovered a cryptic new species of flatbill flycatcher living in the Amazonian lowlands.Flatbill flycatchers are members of the genus Rhynchocyclus in the exclusively New World family Tyrannidae. Four known species in the genus are distributed from southern Mexico to northeastern Bolivia, eastern Venezuela, and Brazil.

Ropesh Goyal from IIT-Kanpur won the 'Young Geospatial Scientist' award in recognition of his unique contribution to developing the Indian Geoid Model & computation software.

Member of Space Commission, GOI and Former ISRO Chairman AS Kiran Kumar presented the award to Goyal during the inaugural event of the DigiSmart India 2021 conference hosted by the Geospatial World.

Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to four years in Myanmar prison

Myanmar’s ousted civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to four years imprisonment after being found guilty on two charges, the first verdicts in a raft of criminal cases that the country’s military has brought against her since seizing power 10 months ago.

Ms. Suu Kyi, 76, was convicted of charges of incitement and violating pandemic rules.

Nasa-turned-SpaceX flight surgeon Anil Menon is among the 10 latest trainee astronauts who will join the 2021 class of the American space agency as it plans for the first human missions to the moon in more than 50 years.

Born to Indian and Ukrainian parents and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Menon is a lieutenant colonel in the US air force.

Pune to host joint military exercise with BIMSTEC countries

Pune will host a multilateral and multi-agency exercise for the member countries of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) between December 20 and 22, which will focus on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

A curtain raiser event for the HADR exercise titled, PANEX-21, was held in New Delhi.
