Shaheen Afridi wins Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Player of 2021

Pakistan’s left-arm seamer Shaheen Afridi has won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2021. Afridi had an unforgettable 2021, claiming a total of 78 wickets in 36 international matches at an average of 22.20.

The award is given to the best overall performer in men’s international cricket in a year.

The government of Assam has honoured philanthropist and industrialist Ratan Tata with the state's highest civilian award, 'Assam Baibhav' 2021.

Awards will be presented in two other categories, Assam Saurav and Assam Gaurav, to 19 personalities for their contribution to the fields of education, administration, health, entrepreneurship, academia, sports, among others.

29 children conferred Bal Puraskar award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conferred the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBR) award to 29 children from across the country ahead of Republic Day. The children received digital certificates through the blockchain technology – the first time that the technology has been used in conferring awards by the government – and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each.

India’s Koozhangal wins best film award at 20th Dhaka International Film Festival

During the recently concluded 20th Dhaka International Film Festival in Dhaka, Indian movie Koozhangal won the best film award in the Asian Film Competition category. The film was helmed by P S Vinothraj.

Apart from this, four more Indian entries were included among the 17 awards given away for the films during the concluding session of the film festival.

IRDAI reduces obligatory cession of premiums to GIC Re to 4% from FY23

The insurance regulator has lowered the obligatory cession of sum insured on each general insurance policy that is to be reinsured with state-owned reinsurer GIC Re to 4 per cent, beginning financial year 2022-23 (FY23), from 5 per cent earlier.

The move could result in GIC Re losing about Rs 1,500-2,000 crore of premiums, said industry experts.

Eminent archaeologist R Nagaswamy passes away

Renowned archaeologist, art historian and Padma Bhushan awardee R Nagaswamy, who was the first director of Tamil Nadu government's Department of Archaeology died.

He was 91.

Nagaswamy was an expert witness in a London court in the famous Pathur Nataraja case and played a key role in bringing back the Chola-era bronze Nataraja to Tamil Nadu.

The Indian Armed Forces have selected Saab's AT4 as their new single-shot weapon.

Saab has been awarded a contract for providing AT4 single-shot support weapons to the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.

The AT4 was selected by the Indian Armed Forces following a competitive programme.

The Indian Armed Forces already operate Saab's Carl-Gustaf multi‐purpose weapon system.

Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was conferred with the Netaji Award 2022 by the Netaji Research Bureau on the 125th birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter.

Consul general of Japan in Kolkata, Nakamura Yutaka, received the honour on behalf of Abe at a function organised by the bureau at the Elgin Road residence.

Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary set to be notified as 4th tiger reserve of Rajasthan

Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary, which is among the proposed five sites in the country, is expected to be formally notified as tiger reserve (TR) soon before the Global Tiger Summit, which is to be held at Vladivostok, Russia.

The Centre also announced the development during the 4th Asia ministerial conference on tiger conservation.
