International Day of Family Remittances - June 16

The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR)was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed on 16 June. IDFR recognizes the 230 million migrant workers, women and men, who send money home to over 800 million family members.

Remittances or cross-border person-to-person payments of relatively small value serve as a vital lifeline to developing world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Kranti Gatha’, a newly created Gallery of Indian Revolutionaries inside the underground British–era bunker at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. He also inaugurated the newly reconstructed 'Jal Bhushan', the residence and office of the Governor of Maharashtra.

COAI names Reliance Jio's Pramod Mittal as Chairperson for 2022-23

Industry body COAI named Pramod K Mittal, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm, as the new Chairperson of the association for 2022-23.

Mittal was previously the Vice-Chairperson of the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), whose members include Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL).

Mittal will replace Ajai Puri as the COAI Chairperson.

WPI inflation in May accelerates to 15.88% on higher food prices - historically the highest in 31 years since September 1991

India’s wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation rate shot up to a record high of 15.88% in May in the current 2011-12 series. With this, WPI-based inflation has been in double-digits for 14 consecutive months.

The latest figure also makes it historically the highest in 31 years since September 1991 (16.31 per cent).

BRICS PartNIR Innovation Center signs MoU with BRICS bank

The BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR) Innovation Center signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) to facilitate bilateral cooperation and promote the common development of BRICS countries.

The BRICS PartNIR Innovation Center was launched in Xiamen in December 2020.

Uttarakhand government tables Rs 65,571.49 crore budget

The proposed Rs 65,571.49 crore budget includes Rs 49,013.31 crore of revenue expenditure and Rs 16,558.18 crore of capital expenditure.

The highest allocation of ₹ 1,500 crore was proposed in the budget for payment of pensions to the old, widows without anyone to depend on, abandoned women, differently-abled and economically weak farmers.

India’s newest recorded snail named after Western Ghats

The Western Ghats of Maharashtra have yielded a carnivorous land snail new to the world of science.

The Haploptychius sahyadriensis, recorded from the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, is the third member of the genus Haploptychius. The other two – H. andamanicus and H. pfeifferi – were recorded in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the 1860s.

Indian para-powerlifters Manpreet Kaur and Parmjeet Kumar have won bronze medals on the opening day of World Para-powerlifting 2022 Asia Oceania Open Championships at Pyeongtaek in South Korea.

Manpreet Kaur, won the bronze medal in the 41 kg category.

In men's category, Parmjeet Kumar, also won the bronze medal in 49 kg category.

Prithvi-II missile successfully test-fired during night time

India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile during night time as part of a user training trial from a test range off the Odisha coast.

The trial of the surface-to-surface missile, which has a strike range of 350 km,was carried out from a mobile launcher from the launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur
