International Day of Women and Girls in Science - 11 February

Celebrated every year on February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed by the United Nation to promote the full and equal access and participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

The theme is IDEAS (Innovate, Demonstrate, Elevate, Advance, Sustain).

Indian civil aviation system jumps to 55th rank in latest ICAO audit: DGCA

The Indian civil aviation system has jumped from 112th rank to 55th rank in the latest audit done by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated.

After the November 2022 audit, India received an updated overall effective implementation (EI) of 85.65%.

UN's body ICAO had in 2018 conducted the previous audit.

Two HC judges elevated to SC, total strength of apex court reaches 34

Rajesh Bindal, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and Aravind Kumar, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court were elevated to the Supreme Court, bringing the total strength of the apex court to its maximum of 34 judges.

Their names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium last month.

Rural development minister Giriraj Singh launches Mission Antyodaya Survey

Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh launched the Mission Antyodaya Survey 2022-23 to assess the outcome of various development schemes in rural areas.

The Department of Rural Development has been conducting the Mission Antyodaya Survey across all gram panchayats since 2017-18 to measure the outcomes through convergence of various schemes.

Govt approves commercial release of Nano-DAP

Agriculture ministry approved commercial release of nano-diammonium phosphate (nano-DAP), which is expected to reduce subsidy and the import dependence on the fertiliser variety. Nano-DAP will be manufactured by IFFCO and Coromandel International.

IFFCO would be selling 500-ml bottles of nano-DAP costing around Rs 600-650 while conventional DAP is Rs.1350.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) approves USD 130 million loan for horticulture sector in Himachal Pradesh

ADB has approved a USD 130 million loan to increase agricultural productivity and promote horticulture agribusinesses to raise farmers’ income in Himachal Pradesh.

Farmers will be organized into cluster-wide community horticulture production and marketing associations and district-wide cooperative societies.

A farmer-producer company(FPC) will be created at the state level.

Alibaba exits India's Paytm, selling shares for $167 million

China's Alibaba Group sold its remaining stake in Indian digital payments firm Paytm for about 13.78 billion rupees ($167.14 million) through a block deal.

The exit comes days after Paytm posted its first-ever quarterly operating profit as a listed firm, nine months ahead of its own target.

Lithium reserves found in Jammu and Kashmir by GSI

The Centre has informed that 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves have been found for the first time in the country. The reserves were discovered during exploration by the Geological Survey of India in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Currently, India is import-dependent for many minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt.

Scientists Discover New Species of Voiceless Frog in Tanzania

The new species is a member of a group of spiny-throated reed frogs within the Hyperolius genus.

Named Hyperolius ukaguruensis, the new species occurs in the Mamiwa-Kisara North Forest Reserve in the Ukaguru Mountains of Tanzania.

This small, silent Ukaguru spiny-throated reed frog doesn’t croak, chirp, sing or ribbit.
