Cabinet approves ₹13,000-crore Vishwakarma Yojana; craftsmen to get subsidised loans up to ₹2 lakh: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Cabinet today approved a ₹13,000 crore PM Vishwakarma scheme that will benefit about 30 lakh traditional artisans and craftsmen, including weavers, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, laundry workers, and barbers.

Under the scheme, craftsmen will be provided a subsidised loan of ₹1 lakh in the first tranche, and another ₹2 lakh in the second tranche.

Did you Know

The loans will be provided at a concessional interest rate of 5 per cent.

Cabinet approves outlay of Rs 14,903 crore to expand Digital India programme

Union Cabinet approved extension of the Digital India programme with an outlay of Rs 14,903 crore to boost digital initiatives in skilling, cyber security, high performance computing and simplifying technology for masses, among other areas.

Under the extended programme, nine more super computers will be added under the National Supercomputing Mission(NCM).

The outlay has been approved for a five-year period between 2021-22 to 2025-26.

Kamlesh Varshney, Amarjeet Singh appointed SEBI whole-time members

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Kamlesh Varshney and Amarjeet Singh as SEBI Whole-Time Members.

At SEBI, Varshney and Singh will fill in the vacancies created by the retirement of S K Mohanty and Ananta Barua.

They have been appointed for three years.

Ms. Madhabi Puri Buch is the Chairperson of SEBI.

Cabinet approves seven rail projects worth ₹32,500 crore to boost connectivity

With a view to improve rail connectivity and ease travel for commuters, the Union Cabinet approved seven projects for Ministry of Railways at a cost of around ₹32,500 crore. Spanning 35 districts in nine States - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, the projects will add 2,339 km to the existing network.

ONGC to scale up renewable capacity to 10 GW by 2030

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is planning to increase its renewable energy capacity from 189 megawatt (MW) to 10 gigawatt (GW) by 2030.

It also plans to significantly increase its spending on green initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint as a broader effort to achieve net zero for scope-1 and scope-2 emissions by 2038.

First-ever WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat

The Ministry of Ayush and World Health Organization are organizing the two day Traditional Medicine Global Summit, on 17th and 18th August 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The Union AYUSH Secretary highlighted that the Global Centre on Traditional Medicines in Jamnagar, established by the WHO, is the first such centre in a developing country.

ADB approves USD 40.5 mn loan for integrated early childhood development programme in Meghalaya

The Asian Development Bank has approved a USD 40.5-million loan for integrated early childhood development (ECD) and maternal mental health programme in Meghalaya.

The state government is also contributing USD 15.27 million to the project. 

It will strengthen home-based childcare (children 0-1.5 years) and centre-based childcare(1.5-6 years) through Anganwadi centres.
