National Sports Day 2023 | 29 August

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29 August every year. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand Singh.

The first National Sports Day was celebrated on August 29, 2012 and hence this year marks the 12th anniversary of Rashtriya Khel Divas.

2023 theme: "Sports are an enabler to an inclusive and fit society".

Defence Ministry inks ₹19,000-crore deal with HSL for 5 Fleet Support Ships

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Visakhapatnam-based state-owned Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for acquisition of first of its kind five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) of 44,000 tonnes for the Indian Navy at an overall cost of approximately ₹19,000 crore.

The Navy envisages eight FSS over next ten years to augment its fleet of tankers.

ISRO to launch Aditya-L1, the first space-based observatory to study Sun

ISRO's Aditya-L1, the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun will be launched from Sriharikota space station in Andhra Pradesh.

The satellite will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point L1 of the Sun-Earth system which is about 1.5 million kms from the Earth.

It will take around four months to reach the Lagrange point.

Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari unveiled a version of Toyota Innova, which runs entirely on biofuel ethanol. Early this month, the minister had announced at a sustainability conclave that he will launch the electric flex-fuel Toyota Innova MPV, which is entirely fueled by ethanol - a fuel which comes from plants - indicated by "E100".

India defeated Thailand 7-2 in the final here to win the inaugural Women's Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier and seal their berth in the berth in the next year's World Cup.

Mariana Kujur (2nd, 8th minutes) and Jyoti (10th, 27th) scored a brace for India, while Monika Dipi Toppo (7th), skipper Navjot Kaur (23rd) and Mahima.

Indian English poet Jayanta Mahapatra passes away

Jayanta Mahapatra, one of India’s best known English poets, passed away in Cuttack.

The legendary poet has left an imprint in the Indian English poetry with his writings spanning over 50 years.

He was conferred Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem Relationship in 1981, a rare recognition for an Indian English writer.

He was awarded Padma Shri in 2015

Indian Air Force contingent reaches Egypt to participate in Multilateral tri-service exercise

In a significant move towards fostering global defence cooperation, an Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent reached the Egyptian Air Force Base to participate in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23.

This will mark the first participation of the IAF in Ex BRIGHT STAR-23, which will also see the participation of air force contingents from the US, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Qatar.

SEBI notifies stricter delisting rules for non-convertible debt securities

SEBI notified a new framework prohibiting listed entities, with more than 200 non-QIB (qualified institutional buyer) holders of non-convertible debt securities, from delisting voluntarily.

Under the new rule, listed entity will have to obtain permission from all holders of non-convertible debt securities within 15 working days of receiving the notification of delisting.
