Eminent filmmaker Shaji N Karun has been selected for the J C Daniel Award for 2023, recognising his lifetime contribution to Malayalam cinema.
The award, the highest honour in Malayalam cinema instituted by the state government, includes a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation, and a statuette.
Shaji N Karun was chosen for the award for his contributions that made a mark for Malayalam at the national and international level, a jury chaired by an earlier recipient of the award T V Chandran, observed.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released the Recommendations on the Definition of International Traffic.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, through a reference dated 30.08.2022, requested TRAI to submit recommendations under Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997 (as amended),
on the definition of International SMS and Domestic SMS.
In this regard, a Consultation Paper on ‘Definition of International Traffic’ was released on 02.05.2023 for soliciting comments and counter-comments of stakeholders. In response, 20 stakeholders submitted their comments, and seven stakeholders furnished their counter-comments.
Salient points of the recommendations are:
The term ‘International Traffic’ should be defined in the relevant telecommunication service licenses and authorisations as below:
“INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC means the traffic originating in one country and terminating in another country, where one of the countries is India.”
The term ‘International SMS Message’ should be defined in the relevant telecommunication service licenses and authorisations as below:
“INTERNATIONAL SMS MESSAGE means the international traffic delivered using SMS.”
The following explanation should be included under the definition of international SMS in the relevant telecommunication service licenses and authorisations:
“Any incoming application to person (A2P) SMS message shall be treated as an international SMS message, if it cannot be generated, transmitted or received without the use or intervention of any electronic device, computer system or computer application located outside India.”
The term ‘Domestic Traffic’ should be defined in the relevant telecommunication service licenses and authorisations as below:
“DOMESTIC TRAFFIC means the traffic originating and terminating within India.”
“DOMESTIC SMS means the domestic traffic delivered using SMS.”
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has facilitated the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Telangana and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, alongside agreements between CSIR and leading recyclers.
The MoU between the Government of Telangana and CSIR aims to develop a skilled workforce in the recycling and waste management sectors. Under this partnership, CSIR’s laboratories and institutions will provide technical support for training programs in Telangana, equipping individuals with expertise in CSIR-developed waste management technologies.
This collaboration will promote the adoption of circular economy principles and create new opportunities for green employment.
Simultaneously, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change enabled the signing of agreements between eight CSIR national laboratories and recyclers, focusing on fifteen innovative waste management and recycling technologies.
The CSIR labs include, CSIR-NIIST, CSIR-IICT, CSIR-NML, CSIR-IMMT, CSIR-CEERI, CSIR-IIP and CSIR-CECRI. Thetechnologies are designed to establish state-of-the-art recycling infrastructure, support domestic waste recycling, and secure critical mineral supplies through advanced recycling processes.
Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language,
or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit 2024 and the Rajasthan Global Business Expo at Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC) in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The theme of the Investment Summit to be held from 9th to 11th December this year is ‘Replete, Responsible, Ready’.
The Summit will host 12 sectoral thematic sessions on the themes of water security, sustainable mining, sustainable finance, inclusive tourism, agri-business innovations and women-led Startups among others. Eight Country sessions will also be held during the Summit with participating countries on the themes like,
Water Management for Livable Cities’, ‘versatility of Industries- manufacturing and beyond’ and ‘Trade & Tourism.’
Pravasi Rajasthani Conclave and MSME Conclave will also be held in three days. The Rajasthan Global Business Expo will feature thematic pavilions such as the Rajasthan Pavilion, Country Pavilions, Startups Pavilion among others.
Over 32 countries, including 16 partner countries and 20 international organizations will participate in the Summit.
Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation in India is expected to decline to 5.5 percent year-on-year in November, compared to 6.2 percent in October, according to a recent report by Morgan Stanley.
The report anticipated that the monthly index will register a sequential decline, primarily attributed to falling food prices.
The report also pointed to a deceleration in core CPI, which includes goods and services excluding food and fuel, as a contributing factor.
This easing in inflation comes as a relief for policymakers and consumers, as high food prices have been a major driver of elevated inflation in recent months.
The government appointed Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), fizzing out rumours on extension of term for incumbent governor Shaktikanta Das.
Malhotra, a seasoned bureaucrat, will be the 26th governor of the apex bank, succeeding Das, whose term is set to end.
Das, who was appointed as the RBI Governor in December 2018, has already surpassed the typical five-year tenure that has been standard in recent decades.
Malhotra is currently serving as Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance. Previously, he held the position of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services.
INS Tushil, the country’s latest stealth missile frigate commissioned into the Indian Navy at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia, in the presence of defence minister Rajnath Singh, who described the warship as a “proud testament” to India’s growing maritime might and a “significant milestone” in the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
Tushil (or the protector shield) is an upgraded Krivak III class frigate of Project 1135.6, and six such vessels are already in service --- three Talwar class ships, built at Baltic shipyard in St Petersburg, and three follow-on Teg class ships, built at the Yantar shipyard.
Tushil has an indigenous content of around 26%, double that of the previous Teg-class frigates,
HT has learnt. This includes contributions from 33 firms including Bharat Electronics Limited, BrahMos Aerospace (an India-Russia joint venture), and Nova Integrated Systems (a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Advanced Systems Limited).
Tushil is part of an over $2.5-billion deal with Russia for four more Krivak/Talwar class stealth frigates for the Indian Navy,
two of which are being constructed at the Yantar shipyard and the remaining two will be built at the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) with technology transfer from Russia. The second Russia-made frigate. Tamal, is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy in mid-2025.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister SM Krishna passed away at his residence in Sadashivanagar, Bengaluru, at the age of 92.
Last year, Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his political career spanning six decades, starting from his first election way back in 1962 upon his return from the US.
Krishna is best known for his time as Karnataka chief minister.
Krishna resigned as MLA as he was appointed as Maharashtra Governor in 2004.
In 1962, Krishna contested his first election from Maddur and won as an Independent. Krishna also represented Mandya in the Lok Sabha.
